Wilkes Wins Two, Moves Into No. 10 on UD Singles Win List

 

KUTZTOWN, PA -- Senior Jessica Wilkes (Nazareth/Bethlehem, PA) moved into 10th place on the all-time University of Delaware singles victory list and teamed with Christine Knox for a victory at No. 1 doubles to lead the Blue Hen women's tennis team to a 7-0 victory over host Kutztown University Saturday afternoon.

Wilkes defeated Kuztown's Tara Moore 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and teamed with Knox for an 8-0 win over the team of Moore and Tara Lancaster as the Blue Hens improved to 2-2 in their final dual match of the fall. Several members of the team will compete at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regionals Nov. 1-2. The NCAA Division I Golden Bears fell to 2-6 on the season.

The match was the first ever between Delaware and Kutztown in women's tennis. Delaware was scheduled to compete as part of the Kutztown Invitational this week but the event was cancelled due to rain Friday. The teams decided to play a dual match instead Saturday.

Wilkes was one of five Delaware singles players to win in straight sets and in the process improved to 41-26 all-time, moving into 10th place all-time in UD history past Carol Renfrew (1980-84), Margie Doukakis (1982-85), and Allison Ashurst (1991-95).

Delaware won all six singles matches in straight sets as Knox defeated Katie Rohrbach 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, Beth Principe downed Jolie Falkowski 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3, Jennifer Lamberton downed Lancaster 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 at No. 4, Stefanie Riddle upended Jamie Payne 6-2, 6-2, at No. 5, and Julia Shapiro was a 6-0, 6-2 winner over Kristen Bodalski at No. 6.

The Blue Hens notched their other victory at No. 3 doubles where Jenna Musolino and Katie Miller teamed for an 8-4 victory over Falkowski and Bodalski.
