Wilkes Wins at No. 1 Singles for Blue Hens

 

NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware got a victory from Jessica Wilkes at No. 1 singles and from the No. 2 doubles team of Christine Knox and Jen Lamberton but dropped a 6-1 decision to Loyola in a non-league women's tennis match Friday afternoon at the Delaware Field House Courts.

The Blue Hens dropped their third straight match this spring to fall to 2-5 on the season. Delaware will return to action Sunday when it hosts Bucknell at 10 a.m.

Wilkes (Nazareth/Bethlehem, PA) was Delaware's lone winner in singles as she posted a 2-6, 6-3, 10-5 win over Loyola's Carolyn Pilkington at the No. 1 spot. The victory upped Wilkes' record to 7-4 this season.

In other singles action, Kaitlin Russo of Loyola defeated Knox, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2, snapping Knox's three-match win streak; Gina Turturiello defeated Lamberton, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3; Colleen Ruane downed Beth Principe, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4; Amy Nitch downed Katie Heath, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5; and Jessica Liberatori was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Delaware's Julia Shapiro.

Delaware earned its only doubles win at the No. 2 spot where Knox (William Penn/New Castle, DE) and Lamberton (Scituate/North Scituate, RI) posted an 8-5 win over the Greyhound team of Colleen Ruane and Gina Turturiello.
