Swarthmore Invitational September 13-14, 2003 Blue Hens Advance Four to Finals in Season Opener SWARTHMORE, PA -- The University of Delaware women's tennis team sent two singles players and two doubles teams to the finals but had to settle for four second place finishes at the season-opening Swarthmore Invitational this past weekend at Swarthmore College. Beth Principe advanced to the Flight B singles finals, Julia Shapiro advanced to the Flight D singles finals, the doubles team of Liz Perlow and Sari Shuster fell in the Flight A doubles championship, and the team of Stefanie Riddle and Katie Rose advanced to the Flight D doubles competition before falling in the final. Principe posted wins over Emily Oster of Muhlenberg, Kristi Miller of Millersville, and Kristina Pao of Swarthmore to advance to the finals before falling to Caroline Celano of Swarthmore by a 6-0, 6-4 score in the finals. Shapiro was a winner over Lauren Goldberg of Muhlenberg, Waverly Lutz of Swarthmore, and Lisa Spatz of Millersville to advance to the championship before falling to Allison Brewer of Millersville 7-5, 0-6 (11-9) in the finals. In doubles play, Delaware's team of Perlow and Shuster defeated Stephanie Eckert and Kate Opilo of Millersville in the first round before losing in the Flight A finals by a score of 8-1 to Swarthmore's Sonya Reynolds and Anjani Reddy. In Flight C doubles, Delaware's Riddle and Rose downed Lisa Spatz and Lenore Moston of Millersville 8-3 in the opening round but were upended in the finals by an 8-1 score by Swarthmore's team of Jenna Adelberg and Emily Townsend.
