Blue Hens Fall to Powerful Retrievers in Season Finale

NEWARK, DE - The University of Delaware men's and women's tennis teams closed out their 2002-2003 seasons with setbacks to UMBC Monday afternoon.

The Delaware men dropped a 6-1 decision to the Retrievers at the Delaware Field House Courts while the UD women fell to the Retrievers 7-0 at the Carpenter Sports Building Courts.

The Delaware men closed out their season with a record of 11-15, their 10th straight season with at least 10 victories, while the UD women closed out the campaign with a mark of 8-11. The 26 matches played by the UD men broke the school record of 24 in 1999-2000.

UMBC, which advanced to the NCAA's in both sports last season, improved to 9-11 on the men's side and 13-4 on the women's side. Both teams are the No. 1 seeds in this week's Northeast Conference championships. The Retriever women have won four straight league titles while the men have captured three straight.

The Delaware men picked up their only singles win on the day at No. 5 singles where Adam Liebman posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Djan Gusmao. Liebman finished the year with a singles record of 11-14. Freshman Josh Ditman lost to UMBC's Tommy Joyce 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 6 spot but finished with the team's best singles record with a mark of 14-7.

Delaware No. 1 player John Tully set a school record with his 30th match played this season. Delaware also picked up a win at No. 2 doubles where Sanjay Khindri and Ditman downed Mikhail Kouznetsov and James Tyler 8-6.

The UMBC women swept all nine matches on the day, including all six singles matches in straight sets. Delaware seniors Jessica Wilkes and Christine Knox closed out their careers.

Wilkes fell to Jana Karaskova 6-0, 6-1 but finished the year with a team-best record of 16-7 and with a career mark of 51-31, the sixth most wins in UD history. Knox fell to Anita Pushpanathan 6-3, 6-4 and finished 8-13 for the season and 23-20 for her career.

Wilkes and Beth Principe dropped an 8-4 verdict to Tia Kaasalainen and Lana Khvalina at No. 1 doubles, snapping their winning streak at five matches.
