Blue Hens Fall to No. 3 Old Dominion in CAA Quarterfinals

 

WILLIAMSBURG, VA -- Both the University of Delaware men's and women's tennis teams were knocked out of the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament Quarterfinals Friday as the women dropped a 4-0 decision to Old Dominion and the men fell to host William & Mary by a 4-1 score.

The No. 6 seed Delaware women, who had a two-match win streak snapped to end the season at 9-10, fell to No. 3 seed Old Dominion (8-11) in the quarterfinals for the third straight year. Old Dominion advances to take on Virginia Commonwealth in Saturday's semifinals.

The No. 7 seed Delaware men, who had a three-match win streak snapped to fall to 12-11, fell in the quarterfinals for the third straight year. No. 2 seed William & Mary (12-11) advances to Saturday's semifinals vs. Old Dominion. William & Mary is ranked 38th in the nation in NCAA I.

In the women's match Friday morning, Old Dominion took the doubles point with two victories as the team of Nataly Cahana and Kerstin Endlich downed Delaware's Jamie deGraffenreid and Sari Shuster 8-0 at the No. 1 spot and Coralie Herrmann and Barbara Kerner defeated Beth Principe and Julia Shapiro 8-0 at the No. 3 spot.

The Monarchs clinched the win with three singles wins as Cahana, the No. 31 ranked player in NCAA Division I and the 2004 CAA Co-Player of the Year, downed Shuster 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot, Herrmann downed Principe 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5, and Maria Martinez upended Stefanie Riddle 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6. Per CAA Tournament rules, the remaining singles matches were suspended because the match was decided.

In the men's match, William & Mary won the doubles point as the No. 2 team of Colin O'Brien and Sean Kelleher defeated Delaware's Josh Ditman and Ari Zweig 8-2 and the No. 3 team of Jeff Kader and Kal Patrick downed Jon Edwards and Philip Wayne 8-3. Edwards and Wayne (5-6) had a four-match win streak snapped.

In singles, Delaware got its only win at the No. 3 spot where Adam Liebman defeated Geoff Russell, who retired in the second set. The Tribe picked up victories at No. 4 where Steve Kane downed Ditman 6-2, 6-1, at No. 5 where Alex Fish downed Zweig 6-2, 6-0, and at No. 6 where O'Brien was a 6-4, 6-0 winner over Wayne. Wayne had a four-match win streak snapped in singles.
