Blue Hens Win First Match of Spring in Decisive Fashion

BABSON PARK, FL -- The Universit y of Delaware men's and women's tennis teams opened their annual spring trip to Florida with a non-league split against host Webber College.

The Blue Hen women won five of the six singles matches in straight sets and swept the three doubles competitions for an 8-1 win while the Delaware men managed just three singles victories in a 6-3 setback to Webber.

The Delaware men (7-5) will take on Saint Leo today (Tuesday) at 2:30 p.m. while the UD women (4-3) will next be in action March 25 at Stetson.

The Delaware women, who avenged a 5-4 loss to Webber last season, won their first match of the spring in three tries as Sari Shuster, Liz Perlow, Jamie deGraffenreid, Beth Principe, and Stefanie Riddle all posted straight set victories in singles. Webber got its only win at No. 3 singles where Steffi Jungmann edged Marissa Singer 6-4, 7-6 (9-7). Shuster picked up her team-leading eighth win of the season.

The Hens also swept the three doubles matches with the No. 1 team of Shuster and deGraffenreid, the No. 2 tandem of Principe and Katie Miller, and the No. 3 team of Perlow and Katie Rose posting victories.

The Blue Hen men split the six singles matches but were swept in doubles. Picking up singles wins for the Hens were Adam Liebman at No. 3 singles, Josh Ditman at the No. 4 spot, and Ari Zweig at the No. 5 spot. Liebman posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Christoph Bonndona, Ditman was a 6-2, 2-6, 10-8 winner over Nico Jungkind, and Zweig won when opponent Enrique Tabares retired due to an injury late in the first set.
