Women Shutout Hofstra 7-0; Reach Highest
Win Total Since 1999-2000

HEMPSTEAD,
NY -- The University of Delaware women's
tennis team posted its eight shutout of
the year with a 7-0 victory over Hofstra
while the Blue Hen men were edged by a 4-3
margin against the Pride in a pair of
Colonial Athletic Association tennis
matches Sunday afternoon.
The
Delaware women improved to 13-5 (2-1 CAA)
as they won all three doubles matches to
earn that point and then swept the six
singles matches, winning each in straight
sets. Hofstra fell to 3-11 with the
loss.
On the
mens' side, Delaware earned the doubles
point but were defeated in four of the six
singles matches to drop the 4-3 decision.
The Blue Hens fell to 9-5 (1-2 CAA) with
their second straight 4-3 loss while
Hofstra improved to 7-5 with the victory.
The
Delaware women remained undefeated
all-time vs. Hofstra at 11-0 and the 13
wins mark the highest win total for the
Blue Hen women since the 1999-2000 squad
posted a 15-5 record and placed second at
the America East championships. The
Hofstra men downed Delaware for the third
straight year and for the second straight
time by a 4-3 margin.
In women's
action, Delaware's Susan Pollack (18-7 -
at right) posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over
Barbara van der Woude at No. 1 singles,
Liz Perlow (18-7) was a 6-2, 7-6 (9-7)
winner over Erika Reggiani at No. 2, Sari
Shuster (17-7) downed Jill Spiritus 6-2,
6-2 at No. 3, Alexa Dragonette downed Mayo
Hosoda 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4, Katie Miller was
a 6-4, 6-0 winner over Valerie McDonald at
No. 5, and Brittany Barsky downed Jillian
Schalk 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6. Pollack and
Perlow each won their 18th singles matches
of the season, the highest total for a UD
player since Elly Giese won a
school-record 24 matches in 1998-99.
In
doubles, Pollack and Dragonette were 8-0
winners over van der Woude and Reggiani at
No. 1, Miller and Barsky teamed for an 8-6
win over Spiritus and Hosoda at No. 2, and
Perlow and Shuster won 8-6 over Schalk and
McDonald at the No. 3 spot.
The
Delaware men won two of the three doubles
matches as Jesse Carl and Jason Hanschman
improved to 13-4 with an 8-4 win over Tal
Alexander and Matt Schor at the No. 2 spot
and the No. 3 team of Philip Wayne and
Sammy Carl were 8-1 winners over Andy Cha
and Rob Sforzo, improving to 14-1 with
their 12th straight victory. The 14 wins
is the third highest single season total
in school history for a UD doubles
team.
In
singles, the Hens got wins from Josh
Ditman (13-4) at the No. 3 spot and from
Hanschman (16-5) at the No. 4 spot. Ditman
posted a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Schor and
Hanschman downed Cha 4-6, 6-0 (9-7).
Hanschman's 16th win tied the school
record for singles wins by a freshman set
by Jeff Harrison in 1989-90 and by Steve
Querner in 1978-79. Delaware's No. 1
player, John Tully, fell to Nikola
Djordjevic 6-4, 6-3 but played in his
100th career singles match - a Delaware
record.
