EWING, NJ -- The University of Delaware women’s tennis team opened the spring season with a non-scoring dual match against host College of New Jersey Saturday afternoon as part of the Lion’s Spring Kickoff Tournament.
The non-team scored event saw College of New Jersey and Delaware play in a seeded singles and doubles format. The Blue Hens and Lions split the six singles matches while College of New Jersey won two of the three doubles events.
Delaware sophomores Susan Pollack (Wyomissing/Wyomissing, PA) and Alexa Dragonette (Wilson/Wyomissing, PA - at right) were double winners for the Hens. Pollack defeated Christina Contrafatto 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 1 singles spot while Dragonette was a 6 1, 6-2 winner over Jackie Gavornik at the No. 4 spot. Pollack and Dragonette then teamed for an 8-2 win over Contrafatto and Gavornik at the No. 1 doubles spot. Pollack is now a team-leading 9-3 in singles action this season.
Also winning at singles for the Blue Hens was Julie Schiller, who recorded a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6) win over Karen Shih at No. 6 singles.
In other singles action, Delaware’s Liz Perlow fell to Haley Kutner 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2, Shari Shuster fell to Kristen Turturiello 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-4) at No. 3, and Katie Iannelli fell to Lindsay Katzel 6-0, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) at the No. 5 spot.
In other doubles play, Kutner and Turturiello downed Perlow and Shuster 8-2 at No. 2 and Shih and Ann Wright were 8-6 winners of Delaware’s Schiller and Abbie Pyeritz.
Delaware will continue its spring dual meet season Feb. 25 at Lehigh.
