NEWPORT NEWS, VA -- The University of Delaware men’s tennis team fell to second-seeded Old Dominion, 4-0, while the Blue Hen women lost to No. 22 and second-seeded William & Mary, 5-0, Friday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the 2006 Colonial Athletic Association Championships at Huntington Park.
The Monarch men improved to 19-7 this season and won their sixth consecutive match, while seventh-seeded Delaware had its two-match winning streak snapped while falling to 8-7 on the year. Harel Srugo, who is ranked No. 30 in the latest ITA men’s singles rankings, defeated Jesse Carl 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 for Old Dominion, while Aleksandr Seleznev posted a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Josh Ditman at No. 4. The other singles winner for the Monarchs was Nate Grover, who downed Josh Levine 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6.
Henrique Cancado was leading Nolan Greenberg 6-1, 5-2 at No. 2 singles for Old Dominion when play was halted, while Eidy Igarashi was ahead of Adam Liebman 6-2, 5-2 at No. 3 and Rodrigo Souza was leading Jon Schwartz 7-6, 2-1 at No. 5.
The Monarchs also took the doubles point as Concado and Igarashi shut out Carl and Greenberg, 8-0, at No. 1 while Matthew Sands and Dominic Manilla defeated Schwartz and Levine, 8-4, at No. 3. Souza and Grover were leading Jason Hanschmann and Philip Wayne, 7-3, at No. 2 when their match was stopped.
The Tribe women, who are the second seed in the tournament, improved to 15-7 on the year, while seventh-seeded Delaware dropped to 9-7 and saw its five-match winning streak snapped. Megan Moulton-Levy, who is ranked No. 18 in the country, posted a 6-2, 6-0 win over Susan Pollack at No. 1 singles for William & Mary, while 78th-ranked Katarina Zoricic notched a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Amanda Campbell at No. 2.
Megan Muth shut out Liz Pelow 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 for the Tribe, while Lingda Young downed Julie Schiller 6-0, 6-3 at No. 6. Klaudyna Kasztelaniec was leading Sari Shuster 6-2, 4-1 at No. 4 for William & Mary when play was halted, while Barbara Zidek was ahead of Brittany Barsky 6-1, 1-0 at No. 5.
Moulton-Levy and Zoricic, the 21st-ranked doubles team in the country, defeated 59th-ranked Pollack and Campbell, 8-3, at No. 1 doubles for the Tribe, while Muth and Yang topped Alexa Dragonette and Barsky, 8-1, at No. 2. Alex Deguzman and Zidek were leading Shuster and Schiller, 7-1, when their match was stopped.
Both Delaware teams, who have fallen in the quarterfinals of the CAA Championships in each of the last five years, conclude their 2006 seasons on Tuesday when the Blue Hens travel to Bucknell for 2 p.m. matches with the Bison.
