NEWPORT NEWS, VA -- The University of Delaware men’s tennis team fell to No. 30 and second-seeded Old Dominion, 4-0, while the Blue Hen women lost to No. 26 and second-seeded Virginia Commonwealth, 4-0, Friday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the 2007 Colonial Athletic Association Championships at Huntington Park.
The Monarch men improved to 20-6 this season, while seventh-seeded Delaware falls to 8-11 on the year. This is the sixth-straight season that the men have fallen in the quarterfinals.
In singles, Alex Seleznev dropped just one game at No. 3 topping Matt Liebman, 6-1, 6-0, Eidy Igarashi knocked off Sam Barrer, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4, and Rodrigo Souza ended Jon Schwartz’s seven match winning streak with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 5.
The Monarchs also took the doubles point using two 8-1 wins from Harel Srugo and Henrique Cancado over Delaware’s Nolan Greenberg and Jason Hanschmann at No. 1, and from Seleznev and Igarashi over Austin Longacre and Andrew Blumberg at No. 2.
In other men’s action, No. 1 VCU defeated No. 8 Hofstra 4-0, No. 3 Old Dominion topped No. 6 James Madison 4-0, and No. 4 Georgia State beat No. 5 UNC Wilmington 4-0.
The seventh-seeded Delaware women fell to 10-11 on the year and had a three-match winning streak snapped by second-seeded VCU. The Blue Hen women have also lost in the quarterfinals for the sixth-straight year.
In singles, Tatsiana Uvarova quickly topped Elena Berry (at right), 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 to claim one singles point. The Rams’ Marianna Yuferova dropped Amanda Campbell 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 and VCU’s Vera Petrashevitch ended the match by beating Laura Honig 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6.
VCU swept the doubles point as the tandem of Yuferova and Olga Borisova dropped Berry and Campbell, 8-0, at No. 1. The Rams’ Uvarova and Petrashevitch topped Alexa Dragonette and Brittany Barsky, 8-1, at No. 2 just as Olena Leonchuk and Viktoria Konstantinova ended their match at No. 3, 8-0, over Liz Perlow and Julie Schiller. The loss is Perlow and Schiller’s first loss as a team this season.
In other women’s action, No. 1 William & Mary swept No. 8 Towson 4-0, No. 3 Old Dominion cruised past No. 6 James Madison 4-0, and No. 4. Georgia State edged No. 5 UNC Wilmington 4-2.
Both Delaware teams conclude their 2007 seasons on Tuesday when the Blue Hens host Bucknell at 3 p.m. at the Delaware Field House Tennis Courts.
