MELBOURNE, FL -- The University of Delaware men’s and women’s tennis teams each picked up victories Friday afternoon as the Blue Hen women defeated host Florida Institute of Technology 7-2 and the UD men downed FIT 6-3.
The Blue Hen women won seven of the nine matches to pick up their third straight victory and improve to 4-5 on the season. FIT fell to 5-7 for the season. Elena Barry, Liz Perlow, Alexa Dragonette (at right), Brittany Barsky, and Laura Honig all won their singles matches, while Dragonette and Julie Schiller and Perlow and Barsky teamed up for doubles wins.
Dragonette’s singles victory was her 13th of the season tying Susan Pollack, who has been lost for the season with an ankle injury, for the team lead. Senior Liz Perlow posted her 49th career victory moving her into a tie for seventh all-time at Delaware.
On the men’s side, Delaware snapped a six-match losing streak by downing the Panthers 6-3. The FIT men fall to 7-12 on the season.
Claiming singles wins for the Hens were Matt Leibman at No. 3, Sam Barrer at No. 4, Jon Schwartz at No. 5, and Camilo Perez at No. 6. Barrer posted his eighth singles win of the season, the most on the Delaware squad.
In doubles action, Delaware picked up wins at the No. 2 spot where Jason Hanschmann and Nolan Greenberg teamed up to post a 9-7 win over FIT’s Jonathan Hanna and Jeremy Casperson, and the No. 3 spot where Barrer and Perez downed Adam Outlaw and Christian Smith 8-0.
Both the men and women’s teams will be back in action Tuesday when they take on Bethune-Cookman at 1 p.m.
