Delaware Women’s Tennis Routs Hofstra 4-0 to Conclude CAA Tennis Weekend

NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware women’s tennis team routed Hofstra 4-0, while the men’s tennis team narrowly fell to James Madison 4-3 to conclude the Colonial Athletic Association tennis weekend at the Delaware Field House Tennis Courts Saturday.

The Delaware women, who have won five of their last six matches, improve to 9-10 overall and 4-3 in CAA play, while the men drop to 7-10 and 3-3 in conference play.

On the women’s side, the Blue Hens only dropped one game as Alexa Dragonette, Brittany Barsky (at right) , and Laura Honig all recorded easy victories in the only completed singles matches.

In the doubles, the duo of Elena Berry and Amanda Campbell defeated Laura Crouch and Stacey Kent 8-2 at No. 1, while Dragonette and Barsky beat Valerie McDonald and Tracey Ferrar 8-3 at No. 2. Liz Perlow and Julie Schiller improved to 6-0 on the year as they topped Lauren Mueller and Hannah Zuckerman 8-0 at No. 3.

On the men’s side, Delaware and James Mames split the six singles matchs, but the Dukes captured the doubles point for the victory.

Picking up singles wins for the Blue Hens were Austin Longacre, Sam Barrer, and Jon Schwartz. Longacre defeated Jessie Tarr 7-6 (2), 6-3 at No. 1, while Barrer cruised past Brian Clay 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4 to pick up his team-leading 14th singles victory. Schwartz topped Carlin Campbell, brother of Delaware women’s tennis player Amanda Campbell, 7-5, 6-4 at No. 5.

James Madison got wins from John Snead who downed Nolan Greenberg 6-2, 7-6 (2) at No. 2, Mike Smith who topped Matt Liebman 7-6 (4), 6-3 at No. 3, and Brian Rubenstein who defeated Camilo Perez 6-4, 6-3 at No. 6.

In the doubles, Delaware got its lone victory at No. 2 where Longacre and Andrew Blumberg teamed up to defeat Campbell and Clay 8-3. The Dukes picked up victories from Tarr and Smith, who topped Greenberg and Jason Hanschmann 8-2 at No. 1 and Snead and Rubenstein, who cruised pass Barrer and Perez 8-1.

Both the men and women will be back in action at the CAA Tournament at Huntington Park, Virginia beginning on Thursday.
