RICHMOND, VA -- The University of Delaware women’s tennis team resumed its 2006-07 season but dropped matches to Campbell, No. 13 Virginia Commonwealth, and East Carolina at the VCU 4 x 1 Invitational this past weekend at the Thalhimer Tennis Center.

The Blue Hens (1-5) fell to Campbell 3-2 and to host Virginia Commonwealth 5-0 on Saturday before dropping a 4-1 decision to East Carolina Sunday morning.

Delaware opened the tournament quickly picking up wins from Susan Pollack and Amanda Campbell at number one and two singles, however the Hens lost the remaining singles matches and the doubles match to fall 3-2 to Campbell. At No. 1 singles Pollack defeated Blanca Saenz 6-3, 6-2 and at No. 2 Campbell downed Scarlet Alfonzo 6-4, 6-2. Campbell won the other three matches as Tanya Ahuja defeated Liz Perlow 7-5, 7-5 at No. 3 singles, Liza Bensimon posted a 6-1, 6-0 win over Sari Schuster at No. 4, and Nina Surviladze and Ana Surviladze teamed for a 6-4, 6-1 win over Brittany Barsky and Elena Berry at No. 1 doubles.

Delaware then fell to nationally ranked and host Virginia Commonwealth in the second match Saturday. The Rams swept all five matches as Marianna Yuferova downed Pollock 6-0, 6-2, Viktoria Konstantinova upended Campbell 6-0, 6-0, Olga Borisova downed Berry 6-1, 6-0, and Varinia Soler defeated Barsky 6-0, 6-0 in singles and Olena Leonchulk and Maria Klokotzky beat Perlow and Shuster in doubles.

In the final match of the tournament Sunday, East Carolina defeated Delaware 4-1. The Hens got their lone win at the No. 2 singles spot where Campbell won her second match of the weekend, defeating Luiza Borges 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 13-11. Anca Dumitru defeated Pollack at the No. 1 spot, Mireia Gol downed Berry at No. 3, and Brooke Walter was a winner over Barsky at No. 4 singles. In the lone doubles match, Presley Thomas and Alex Smith of East Carolina teamed for a 6-3, 6-2 win over Perlow and Shuster.

Delaware will continue play February 10th at the College of New Jersey Doubles Tournament. Matches start at 9:30 a.m.
