NORFOLK, VA -- Sophomore Andrew Blumberg (right) and two Delaware doubles teams won their respective semifinal matches Saturday at the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational, a 28-team event hosted by Old Dominion that saw the Blue Hen men and women send a combined nine entries to semifinal play.
Blumberg, in Flight D singles, defeated Matthew Schwartz of Hofstra, 6-1, 6-0, to move on to tomorrow’s final, where he will face Villanova’s John Drosick at 9 a.m. Blumberg, who hadn’t played a singles match all season, lost a total of six games in three preliminary rounds on the way to the final.
Meanwhile, freshman Chris Hincker and junior Amit Kapur ousted Dan Dagostino and Rob Mattison of Loyola in their Flight D doubles showdown, securing a place in Sunday’s final. Sophomore Elena Berry and freshman Ivana Petrich did likewise in Flight C women’s action, scoring a walkover win over a Hofstra pair to advance.
The Blue Hen men were represented in the semifinals of all five singles flights, as sophomore Austin Longacre (A1), junior Nolan Greenberg (A2), sophomore Sam Barrer (B), and senior Jon Schwartz (C) notched two wins apiece before falling just short of the finals.
Senior standout Susan Pollack reached the Flight A singles semifinal, where she fell to Temple’s Dina Senkina by a 6-4, 6-3 tally, while fellow senior Alexa Dragonette dominated in the early rounds of Flight C1 before losing to another Owl, Josephine Bergman, in her semifinal.
Pollack and freshman Courtney Fenimore made a run of their own in Flight A doubles, easing through the prelims before they were ousted by a duo from Old Dominion.
The Blue Hen men went 18-7 in singles play over the first two days of the tourney, while the women boasted a 13-9 mark. Overall, UD athletes have posted a 38-20 record at the highly competitive invitational, which features nine CAA teams and several top squads from the Big East and the Atlantic Coast Conference.
