NEWARK, Del. -- University of Delaware men’s and women’s tennis head coach Laura Travis has announced the additions of Susan Pollack (at right) and Shane Baker as assistant coaches to the Blue Hen staff.
Pollack was Travis’ no. 1 singles and doubles player for four years before graduating this past Spring. She was named First Team All-CAA Doubles Team and Second Team All-CAA Singles Team in 2006, and second team in singles and doubles in 2008 as well.
She has also served on the Student Athletic Advisory Council (division of student government for athletes) since 2005, and the Helping Each Newcomer Succeed (HENS) Program to mentor incoming freshman athletes since 2006. She is taking over for her father who served as a volunteer assistant coach last year.
“[Susan] is the best player to come through our women’s program, and we are delighted she has stayed on in a coaching capacity,” Travis said.
Baker is finishing his last year in a five-year dual degree in Electrical Engineering and Masters of Business.He will serve as a part-time assistant coach.
A former All-County Gold Team Tennis Athlete in Bucks County, Pa., he has held every officerposition on the Club Tennis Team at UD, and he is on the Middle States Collegiate Committee. This past May, Baker garnered the University of Delaware “YoUDee” Leadership Award for Male Club Sport Leader. Also, he is a professionally certified tennis instructor since 2005, and has served as an Assistant Pro at Elkton Indoor Tennis in Elkton, Md.
Pollack and Baker will join Shane Racine, who is entering his second year with the team as an assistant coach. Racine is a full-time teaching professional at Greenville Country Club.
