BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The University of Delaware women’s tennis team cruised to a 7-0 victory over Lehigh in its Spring season opener inside the Lewis Tennis Center on Sunday. The Blue Hens (3-0) won the top two doubles flights and swept the six singles matches as they handed the Mountain Hawks (3-7) their second straight loss.

Junior Elena Berry and freshman Jo Jo Gruber improved to 11-4 in No. 1 doubles play as they dominated Lehigh’s Julie Arthofer and Elizabeth Piscitelli, 8-0.

Delaware sophomore Ivana Petrich (at right) and freshman Samantha Carnall had no trouble either as they defeated Allison Schwartz and Ariela Cohen, 8-2 in No. 2 doubles to pick up the doubles point for the Blue Hens.

Lehigh would pick up its lone win of the afternoon in No. 3 doubles when Stacey Reich and Ruthie Furman would defeat Delaware’s sophomore Megan Doran and UD’s second all-time leader in doubles wins, senior Amanda Campbell by a narrow margin of 8-5. Campbell stays just five games short of tying current assistant coach Susan Pollack for individual career doubles wins with 64.

The Blue Hens would then take control of the match and roll off six straight singles wins.

First, Berry was put to the test, but came out victorious over Schwartz, 7-5,7-6. The Bradenton, Fla. native is now 13-3 in No. 1 singles play for the season.

Doran stayed perfect in No. 2 singles play for the season by defeating Arthofer 6-2, 6-3. The freshman is now 8-0 in No. 2 singles play.

Lehigh’s Cohen took the first set versus Petrich at No. 3 singles, but the sophomore from Canada came storming back to win the next two sets 7-6, 6-0.

Reich picked up the Mountain Hawks’ only other set, taking the second set against Campbell at No. 5 singles before losing in a ten-point drawbreak.

Gruber also picked up a win for Delaware at No. 4 singles, defeating Piscitelli, 6-1, 6-0. Gruber is now 12-2 on the season.

Carnall would finish the day off for the Hens with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Furman. Carnall is 9-3 for the season.
