NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware women’s tennis team won five of six singles matches and all three doubles matches as the Blue Hens cruised to a 6-1 victory Thurs. afternoon over Towson at the Delaware Field House.
Junior Elena Berry fell to Towson’s Caitlin White, 7-5, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, but Delaware won every match the rest of the way. Sophomore Megan Doran got things started for Delaware with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Lauren Cloonan at No. 2 singles. Doran improved to 18-6 for the season with the win.
Sophomore Ivana Petrich followed with a win at No. 3 singles. She defeated Aandria Carr in an extended match, 7-6 (7-4) 6-1. Petrich improved to 22-3 for the season and 43-6 for her career. She ties Head Coach Laura Travis’ (the former Laura LeRoy) mark of 22 singles win in a season in 1988-89. She is two wins short of tying the all-time singles season wins record.
Freshman Jo Jo Gruber (at right) then won at No. 4 singles by a score of 6-1, 6-1 over Evelyn Izaguirre. Gruber is now 19-5 in her rookie campaign. Senior Amanda Campbell and freshman Samantha Carnall wrapped up singles play with wins at the No. 5 and No. 6 flights.
Delaware would go on to win all three doubles flights. Berry and Gruber had to battle to defeat White an Cloonan, 9-7 at No. 1 doubles, but Petrich and Carnall and Doran and Campbell cruised to 8-1 victories at No. 2 and 3.
The Blue Hens take the court again tomorrow, Fri., Apr. 10 when they host CAA rival George Mason at 1:30 p.m. at the Elkton Indoor Tennis Courts.
