NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware women’s tennis team won two singles matches and one doubles match as the Blue Hens fell to visiting UMBC, 5-2 on Tues. afternoon at the Delaware Field House.
Junior Elena Berry (at right) defeated Ana Mungo 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1 singles and sophomore Ivana Petrich defeated Alice Chen at No. 3, but the Retrievers won the other four singles matches and then took two of the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point.
Berry’s win was the 50th of her career. She moves to 20-5 on the season and 50-19 for her career. Petrich improved to 21-3 for the season and 42-6 for her career. Petrich and Berry are just one and two wins away from tying Head Coach Laura Travis’ (the former Laura LeRoy) mark of 22 singles win in a season set in 1988-89. Petrich was 21-4 last season.
UMBC won the first two doubles matches to earn the point, but sophomore Megan Doran and senior Amanda Campbell defeated Emily Mannix and Lauren Hamilton 8-6 at the third flight. Campbell and Doran improved to 23-2 for the season which sets a school record for wins in a season by a doubles team formerly held by Campbell and Asisstant Coach Susan Pollack with 22 in 2005-06. They have also both tied Pollack’s season record of 23 individual doubles wins also set in 2005-06.
The Blue Hens take the court again on Thurs., Apr. 9 when they host CAA rival Towson at 2 p.m.
The University of Delaware men’s tennis team won two of the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point, but only managed two wins in singles play as the Blue Hens dropped a 4-3 decision to visiting UMBC Tuesday afternoon at the Delaware Field House.
Sophomore Chris Hincker and junior Sam Barrer won at No. 3 and 4 singles, respectvely for the Blue Hens, but UMBC won the other four singles flights. Hincker defeated Chris Meyer 6-2, 6-1 followed by Barrer’s 6-2, 6-4 win over Joe Adewumi.
With the win, Hincker improves to 17-6 for the season and 37-14 for his career. He is two wins away from tying his win total from a year ago when he set a record for singles wins in a season by a freshman with 19. Barrer improves to 12-7 for the year and 41-29 for his career.
Freshman Andre Vorobyov, who won the decisive match in the Blue Hens’ first ever win against James Madison on Sat., battled hard before eventually falling to Fredi Voorman 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (9-7). Sophomore Nick Piacente also extended his match before falling 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.
The Blue Hens’ No. 2 and 3 tandems of Hincker and freshman Courtney Scott and Vorobyov and junior Camilo Perez won their matches to pick up the point for Delaware, but it was too little too late as the Blue Hens fell 4-3.
Delaware will next be in action on Fri., Apr. 10 when the Hens host George Mason at 1 p.m.
