WILMINGTON, N.C. - The University of Delaware men’s tennis team had its six--match win streak snapped Wed. afternoon as UNCW defeated the visiting Blue Hens, 6-1 in Colonial Athletic Association Round Robin action.

With the loss, the Blue Hens fell to 8-3 for the year and 1-1 in the CAA. The Seahawks improved to 12-5 for the year and 2-0 in the CAA.

Under threatening skies for most of the afternoon, UNCW won the doubles point with victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 flights before taking five of the six singles matches. The Blue Hens’ No. 1 tandem of junior Austin Longacre and senior Nolan Greenberg were down 5-4 when the match was called off in order to move on to singles play before rain set in.

At No. 3 doubles, the reigning CAA doubles team of the week, Delaware’s freshman Andre Vorobyov and junior Camilo Perez, fell to Michael Pereira and Alex Wetherell, 8-1. Kinshuk Sharma and Illia Ziamtsou then defeated sophomore Chris Hincker and freshman Courtney Scott, 8-2, at No. 2 doubles to clinch the early point for the Seahawks.

The Seahawks added five singles wins, two of them coming on extended matches. At No. 2 singles, Vorobyov battled Pereira to a super tie-breaker before eventually falling, 6-3, 3-6, 10-6. Also, at No. 5 singles, Scott took an early lead over Illia Ziamtsou before Ziamtsou rallied to win, 6-7 (4), 6-0, 10-5.

UD collected its lone point at No. 1 singles when UNCW’s Gustavo Bertei was forced to retire with an injury after dropping the opening set, 6-4, to Longacre.

The Seahawks resume play in the event on Friday with a 2 p.m. match against Drexel. Delaware faces James Madison on Saturday at 9 a.m.

In women's action, the Blue Hens fell to host UNC Wilmington in Colonial Athletic Association Round Robin action on Wed. afternoon at the UNCW Tennis Complex.

The Blue Hens fell to 9-1 (1-1 CAA) and the Seahawks improved to 15-2 (3-2 CAA) for the season.

Delaware dropped the first two doubles matches, and the third was suspended in a tie. The Blue Hens’ No. 3 tandem of senior Amanda Campbell (fresh off of setting the UD career doubles wins record on Monday) and sophomore Megan Doran were tied, 5-5 with UNCW’s Lindsay Leblang and Hartley Collins.

Junior Elena Berry (at right) picked up the Blue Hens only singles win as she defeated Kayla Schwenk 6-3, 7-5 at No. 1. Berry improved to 19-4 for the season.

UNCW would win the next three singles matches before play was stopped. When play resumes, Campbell will face Lauren Isenhour at No. 5 singles and freshman Samantha Carnall will face Leblang at No. 6 singles.
