NEWARK, Del. - Three University of Delaware women’s tennis doubles teams were recently selected as three of 12 teams to tie for the No. 44 national ranking by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, the governing body of collegiate tennis. In addition to the doubles squads, the Blue Hens were also represented by one player in the No. 124 singles spot.
The duos of junior Megan Doran and sophomore Samantha Carnall, Doran and junior Kristen Mueller, and juniors Ivana Petrich and Montserrat Ripoll were each selected to the top 60 doubles teams with records of 8-0, 6-1 and 8-1, respectively.
The Tennessee team of Caitlin Whoriskey and Natalie Pluskota ranked first in the Jan. 5 poll, while the Hens’ doubles teams were joined in the No. 44 spot by teams from Rhode Island, Washington, College of Charleston, Washington State, Old Dominion, Kansas, Rice, Colorado and Mount St. Mary’s.
Mueller (at right) was the lone Blue Hen represented in the singles rankings. Mueller was in a three-way tie with players from Washington State and Liberty after having compiled a 17-1 record this fall. Mueller’s flawless 9-0 record at No. 3 singles helped UD to a 2-0 record during fall action. Georgia Tech’s Irina Falconi led the singles rankings at No. 1 with a 12-1 record thus far this season.
The Blue Hens will resume play on Feb. 7 with a 4 p.m. match at Maryland.
