BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The University of Delaware men’s and women’s tennis teams traveled to Lehigh University to blank the Mountain Hawks on both behaves, 7-0, at the Ulrich Tennis Courts on Thursday afternoon.
The UD men’s team improved to 3-4 overall and the women’s team to 5-1 overall, while the Mountain Hawks fell to 5-5 overall and 1-7 overall, respectively.
Delaware was led by senior Austin Longacre at No. 1 singles in edging Lehigh’s Troy List, 6-4, 6-7, 7-9, 13-11. Longacre improved to 12-2 at No. 1 singles while junior Gokay Celik tallied a 6-1 No. 2 record by defeating Collin Laffey, 5-7, 6-2, 10-5.
Sophomore Courtney Scott secured a victory over Leland Richardson in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 3 spot, while junior Chris Hincker stole the game from Ryan Krueger in fine fashion, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 singles. In No. 5 action, sophomore Andre Vorobyov cruised past Andrew Krentz, 6-2, 7-6, 7-2, and senior Sam Barrer closed out the singes sweep by defeating Matt Finck, 6-1, 6-0, in No. 6 action.
The Blue Hens collected the doubles point with a 3-0 doubles mark. Longacre and Celik teamed to defeat List and Laffey, 8-5, in No. 1 action, and Vorobyov and Barrer gathered a tight 8-7, 7-2, victory over Cameron Silbert and Arnaldo Pacheco in No. 3 doubles. Scott and Hincker were awarded the No. 2 victory after retiring the match at 3-2 due to injury.
The women’s team also garnered the doubles point with a 3-0 doubles performance. Senior Elena Berry and junior Montse Ripoll defeated Julie Arthofer and Liz Piscitelli, 8-5, in No. 1 action, while junior Megan Doran and sophomore Samantha Carnall blanked the Mountain Hawks’ Stacey Reich and Patti Muething, 8-2, at the No. 2 spot. Freshman Amanda Halstrom and junior Samantha Mueller closed out the day’s doubles action with an 8-6 victory over Kiera Murasko-Blank and Abbey Perl in No. 3 action.
Doran (at right) led the Blue Hens in the No. 1 singles match by blanking Piscitelli, 6-1, 6-0, while Berry captured the No. 2 match over Reich, 6-2, 6-4. Ripoll improved to 9-1 on the season with a 6-0, 6-0 No. 3 singles ace of Muething. Carnall won the No. 4 match, 6-1, 6-0, over Perl, while Halstrom took the No. 5 match over Isabel Breit in similar fashion, 6-1, 6-0. Mueller finished the day defeating Lehigh’s Gena Levengood, 6-2, 6-3, in No. 6 singles action.
The Hens return to the court on March 20 when they travel to George Mason for a 1 p.m. match. The match will tip-off Delaware’s 2010 Colonial Athletic Association play.
