BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The University of Delaware men’s and women’s tennis teams competed at Lehigh University’s Invitational on Saturday and Sunday.
The teams combined for a record of 48-7 over the two-day tournament, as the women were 19-4 and men, 29-3.
In women’s doubles action on Saturday each of the Hens’ teams tallied victories. Ivana Petrich and Montse Ripoll defeated Audrey Hansen and Annie Hang of Army, 8-4 at No. 1 doubles. Samantha Carnall and Amanda Halstrom won the No. 2 match over Paige Ford and Morgen Kiser of Army, while Megan Doran and Kristen Mueller overpowered Army’s Holly Pappafotis and Kari Pope, 8-1, at the No. 3 spot.
The following day, Delaware’s No. 1 and No. 2 teams fell to Temple duos, though Doran and Mueller notched their second victory of the weekend over Lehigh’s Gena Levengood and Isabel Breit, 8-2.
In men’s doubles action, the Hens went 10-2. On Saturday, Austin Longacre teamed with Gokay Celik to win their first match as they defeated Moravian’s Ian Box and Kevin Holze, 9-8 (4), at No. 1 action.
At No. 2 doubles, Courtney Scott and Chris Hincker were three for three. On Saturday the pair won each of their matches, 8-6. They defeated Lehigh’s Arnardo Pacheo and Sicery before edging by Dmitry Vizhunov and Matt King of Temple. On Sunday, they won an 8-5 battle over Pacheo and Cameron Silbert of Lehigh.
Andre Vorobyov and Jeff Marshall also won their pair of contests on Saturday. They first blanked Drew Shreter and Nick Yelito of Moravian, 8-0, at No. 3 doubles before winning a tight 9-8 (4) match against Greg Holtzman and Andrew Krentz of Lehigh. On Sunday Vorobyov joined with Nick Piacente at No. 3 play to take an 8-4 match from Lehigh’s Matt Savron and Edgars Rauza.
Finishing out men’s doubles action, Delaware put together three successful teams at No. 4 play. The team of Piacente and Camilo Perez defeated Moravian’s Thomas Turcich and Lehigh’s Matthew Fink, 8-2. Piacente then teamed with Ryan Kent to defeat the Mountain Hawks’ Chris Collins and Ryan Krueger, 9-7. The UD squad of Marshall and Perez also beat Collins and Krueger, 9-7.
In singles action, the Hens faired very well, also.
Doran competed at No. 1 singles for the Blue and Gold. The junior defeated Ford of Army, 6-0, 6-1, before overwhelming Lehigh’s Stacey Reich, 6-0, 6-0.
At No. 2 play, Petrich fell in the first round before notching a win in the second. She defeated Lehigh’s Patricia Meuthing, 6-1, 6-2.
Ripoll (at right) competed at the No. 3 spot defeating Army’s Hansen, 6-3, 6-3, and Lehigh’s Kiera Murasko-Blank, 6-3, 6-3, on Saturday. She then defeated Temple’s Lucie Pazderova, 6-3, 6-4, on Sunday.
Carnall did just the same by winning three straight at No. 4. The Hens’ sophomore blanked Army’s Kiser, 6-0, 6-1, overpowered Lehigh’s Levengood, 6-0, 6-1, and outplayed Temple’s Josephine Bergman, 3-6, 6-0, 10-7.
Halstrom was 3-0 at No. 5 singles as she defeated Army’s Pappafotis, 6-1, 6-0, Lehigh’s Abbey Perl, 6-1, 6-1, and Temple’s Mellana Cramer, 6-1, 7-6 (9-7).
Finishing out the women’s singles play, Mueller did just as many of her teammates did, as she defeated her three opponents. First she beat Army’s Pope, 6-2, 3-6, 10-7, before upsetting Lehigh’s Breit, 6-1, 6-1, on Saturday. Sunday, Mueller aced Levengood of Lehigh, 6-1, 6-0.
In men’s singles action, Longacre led the Hens with three victories in the No. 1 spot. He first Defeated Moravian’s Box, 6-2, 6-0, on Saturday. On Sunday, Longacre took a pair of matches against List of Lehigh, 6-1, 6-7 (3-7), 11-9, and Temple’s Kacper Rams, 7-5, 6-1.
A pair of Hens combined to win four matches as Celik and Scott each took two at No. 2 singles. Celik defeated Lehigh’s Collins, 6-1, 6-2, on Saturday, and Rauza, 6-2, 6-3, on Sunday. Meanwhile, Scott overpowered Holze of Moravian, 6-0, 6-2, and Lehigh’s Savron, 6-3, 6-2.
Hincker competed at the No. 3 spot for the Hens. He notched two wins on Saturday, defeating Lehigh’s Krueger, 6-3, 6-4, before tallying a come-from-behind win over Temple’s Vizhunov, 4-6, 6-4, 10-8.
At No. 4 play, Delaware competed three. Vorobyov defeated Lehigh’s Holtzman, 6-1, 6-2, on Saturday and the Mountain Hawks’ Collins, 6-4, 6-0, on Sunday. Piacente first blanked the Greyhound’s Shreter, 6-1, 6-0, and then took a 6-2, 6-2 match from Pacheo of Lehigh. Marshall finished out the fourth-flight singles play for the Hens with two strong victories. On the first day of play, he defeated Fink of Lehigh, 6-0, 6-0, before taking a 6-3, 6-0 match from Krentz of Lehigh on Sunday.
Perez won two of three at the No. 5 spot as he defeated Moravian’s Yelito, 6-0, 6-2, on Saturday and Lehigh’s Holtzman, 6-2, 6-1, on Sunday.
Closing out the Hens’ weekend results, Kent was 2-0 in No. 6 singles. Kent defeated Turcich of Moravian, 6-1, 6-0, and Fink of Lehigh, 6-3, 7-6 (5).
