BETHLEHEM, Pa. –The University of Delaware women’s and men’s tennis teams competed at Lehigh University’s Invitational on Saturday and Sunday.
The teams combined for a record of 34-7 over the two-day tournament, as the women were 18-0 and men, 16-7.
In doubles action on Saturday, Elena Berry (at right) and Montse Ripoll paired to defeat Jane Carroll and Taylor Holt of Fordham, 8-1, at No. 1 doubles, before Ripoll teamed with Ivana Petrich to upset Marist’s Jeannie Lukin and Kayla O’Donovan, 8-2. At the No. 2 spot, Petrich and Samantha Carnall defeated Sarah Tremaine and Martina Featherston of Fordham, 8-1, in the opening round before Berry and Carnall registered an 8-3 victory over Featherston and teammate Brittany Russell. To close out the Blue Hens’ women’s doubles action, Amanda Halstrom and Kristen Mueller went 2-0. They defeated both Jennifer Mullen and Russell of Fordham and Bilas-Baas and Joanna Macaluso of Marist, 8-3.
In men’s doubles competition, the men’s squad was 5-3. Courtney Scott and Chris Hincker led the Hens at No. 1 action, defeating Corey Forrest and Harvey Bhalla of Monmouth, 8-4, before overpowering Kevin Gardiner and Dylan Whiting of Bryant, 8-3. Gokay Celik and Nick Piacente won their first of two No. 2 matches tallying an 8-2 victory over Temple’s Dmitry Vizhunov and Matt King.
The Hens were 1-1 at No. 3 and No. 4 action. The No. 3 win came from the duo of Camilo Perez and Ryan Kent. The pair defeated Monmouth’s David Sherwood and Ben Dashiell, 8-4, while Jeff Marshall and Kent edged past Andres Orobitg and Daniel Cournover of Bryant, 8-6.
En route to its perfect weekend, Delaware won 12 consecutive singles matches over Marist and Lehigh opponents. At No. 1 singles, Berry defeated Lehigh’s Julie Arthofer, 6-2, 6-4, before overpowering Marist’s Lukin, 6-0, 6-2. Petrich competed at the No. 2 spot for the Hens, defeating the Mountain Hawks’ Elizabeth Piscitelli, 6-4, 6-0, and Bilas-Baas of Marist, 6-1, 6-0.
At No. 3 play, Ripoll defeated Stacey Reich and Abbey Perl, both of Lehigh, 6-1, 6-4, and, 6-1, 6-1, respectively. Carnall also took two, defeating Lehigh’s Patricia Muething, 6-2, 6-0, and blanking Isabel Breit, also of Lehigh, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 4 singles.
At No. 5 action, Halstrom first defeated Gena Levengood of Lehigh, 6-3, 6-1, before upsetting Marist’s Kayla O’Donovan, 6-1, 6-1. Mueller closed out the Hens’ singles action on Sunday, defeating a pair of No. 6 opponents. Mueller recorded a 6-3, 6-1 victory over the Mountain Hawks’ Kiera Murasko-Blank and later dominated Marist’s Joanna Macaluso, 6-0, 6-0.
The Hens’ men’s squad went 11-4 in singles action, led by Hincker and Sam Barrer at No. 2 play. Hincker defeated Bryant’s Kevin Gardiner, 6-4, 6-3, before notching a come-from-behind win over Collin Laffey of Lehigh, 4-6, 6-1, 10-5. Barrer tallied his pair of wins against Nicholai Hill of Bryant, 6-2, 6-3, and Edgars Rauza of Lehigh, 6-2, 6-2.
At No. 3 action, Piacente first overpowered Bryant’s Thomas Nowark, 6-1, 6-2, and later edged Lehigh’s Matt Savran, 7-5, 6-3. Marshall recorded two victories for the Blue and Gold over the Bulldogs’ Andres Orobitg, 6-0, 6-1, and Lehigh’s Ryan Krueger, 7-5, 6-4, at the No. 4 spot.
Perez won one of two at No. 5 singles, by defeating Daniel Cournover of Bryant, 6-2, 6-2, while Kent was solid in his No. 6 matches, defeating Whiting of Bryant, 6-4, 6-0, and Chris Collins of Lehigh, 6-3, 6-3.
This weekend, the Hens concluded their fall schedule at Lehigh. The women’s squad will return to action on Feb. 7 at Maryland, and the men on Feb. 13 when they travel to the College of New Jersey for a dual match.
