UD Competes at Old Dominion Collegiate Open

NORFOLK, Va. -- The University of Delaware tennis teams displayed a number of stellar performances at the Old Dominion University Collegiate Open Oct. 2-4.

On the women’s side, junior Kristen Mueller led the Hens in winning one of the three No. 3 singles competitions of the tournament. Mueller (at right) first defeated Michele Jordan of Villanova, 6-1, 6-1, before defeating Naeemah Brooks of Norfolk State, 6-3, 6-1, in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Mueller edged Fanny Aizier of NJIT, 6-2, 7-5, to earn a spot in the championship match. Mueller defeated Campbell’s Anais Gomar, 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (5), in the final match of the bracket.

In another of the No. 3 singles competitions, freshman Amanda Halstrom sliced her way through to the championship match but fell to ODU’s Diana Ivanova, 6-1, 6-1. Halstrom was awarded a bye in the first round before defeating Navy’s Stefanie Ton, 6-2, 6-4, in the quarterfinals. Halstrom then blanked Brooke Sailor of Hofstra, 6-2, 6-2, in the semis before advancing to play Ivanova for the title.

In No. 1 singles play, Delaware’s junior Megan Doran fell to Anik Cepeda of William & Mary, 6-3, 6-1, before losing to Pittsburgh’s Elizabeth Adams, 8-6, in the consolation bracket. Also at No. 1 singles, Hens’ junior Ivana Petrich def. Ashley Moore of Howard, 6-3, 6-4, to advance to the quarterfinals. VCU’s Josefin Hjertquist beat out Petrich, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (6), to move on to the semifinals.

In second-flight singles, sophomore Samantha Carnall easily handled Michele Gee of Howard, 6-1, 6-1, before taking Drexel’s Emma Brooks, 6-0, 6-3. Carnall dropped her semifinal match to JMU’s Michelle Nguyen in a close 6-4, 7-4 (4) loss. Montse Ripoll also competed at No. 2 singles for the Blue and Gold, but fell to Howard’s Brittney Morgan 7-6 (4), 6-3.

The Blue Hens tallied a title in No. 1 doubles action as Petrich and Ripoll teamed to defeat four opposing squads. The Delaware duo earned a close, 9-8 (4), win in the round of 16 by defeating Navy’s Dyuti Das and Emani Decuir before advancing to easily defeat NJIT’s Nina Mayevska and Isha Toor, 8-1. In the semifinals Petrich and Ripoll overpowered Elizabeth Adams and Shannon Benic of Pittsburgh, 8-3, and went on to defeat Anik Cepeda and Nina Vulovich of William & Mary, 9-7, for the championship.

At No. 2 doubles Carnall and Halstrom defeated Kristin Gobberg and Courtney Reed of Villanova, 8-4, but fell to
Liberty’s Jordan Jenkins and Nadia Solomon-Burgess, 8-4, in the quarterfinals.

Closing out women’s doubles play for the Hens, Doran and Mueller defeated Brooke Sailor and Sonia Isay of Hofstra, 8-1, and Melissa Bohm and Anahita Jagtiani of Drexel, 8-5, before falling in the No. 3 doubles semifinals match. Campbell’s Anais Gomar and Blanca Saenz defeated the pair, 8-3.

In men’s action, the lone title was won by the team of freshman Ryan Kent and senior Camilo Perez in No. 4 doubles action. Kent and Perez defeated NJIT’s Dimitri Athans and Bryan Keelan, 8-5, and advanced to beat Aaron Benjamin and Richard King of Morgan State, 8-1. In the semifinals, the duo defeated Anton Anderson and Jacob Braig, 8-3, and later earned an 8-5 victory over Campbell’s Ondej Kralik and Loukas Wallaart, in the championship match.

Another Delaware squad advanced to the final match its respective bracket as junior Gokay Celik and senior Austin Longacre faced JMU’s Matt King and Mike Smith in the No. 1 doubles championship. Celik and Longacre dropped a 8-4 decision to the Dukes’ duo in the final match, but won three straight to get to that match.

Celik and Longacre defeated Hofstra’s Stian Tvedt and Matt Wacks, 8-1, in the first round of play. They then edged out Liberty’s Tristan Stayt and Siim Tuss, 9-7, before defeating Kriztian Krocsko and Filip Svensson of VCU, 8-5.

At No. 2 doubles, junior Chris Hincker and sophomore Courtney Scott swept Chris Brown and Eric Chavous of Howard, 8-0. The pair then lost in the quarterfinals to Louis Steyn and Ben Wirth of Liberty, 9-8 (6).

Senior Sam Barrer and junior Nick Piacente received a bye in the first round of No. 3 doubles and went on to defeat
Norfolk State’s Dexter McDowell and Jonathan Sessom, 8-6. The Hens’ duo lost their next match, 8-5, to Ken Mkrtchian and Garrett Lockhart of George Washington.

At the No. 1 singles spot for the Hens, Celik led the way by advancing to the finals. Celik had a bye in the first round before defeating Hofstra’s Chris Damion, 6-4, 6-4, in the quarterfinals. Celik then edged East Carolina’s Henrik Skalmerud, 6-3, 7-5, to advance to the final match. In the championship Celik fell to Ernesto Ramos of Coastal Carolina, 6-3, 6-2.

Also in No. 1 singles action Longacre defeated JMU’s Jared Robinson in a hard-fought 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (8) victory, but then fell to VCU’s Filip Svensson, 6-4, 7-5, in the quarterfinals.

Scott defeated Juan Ortiz of Morgan State, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 2 singles, before falling to William and Mary’s Richard Wardell 6-1, 6-3. Also competing at No. 2 singles, Hincker defeated Diego Abreu of NJIT 6-1, 6-1 and went on to overpower Drexel’s Jason Savage-Pollock, 6-0, 6-3. Hincker fell to JMU’s Greg Vladimirsky, 6-4, 6-1, in the semifinals.

At No. 3 singles action, Delaware’s Nick Piacente dropped a 6-0, 6-4 decision to Lubos Sobotka of Campbell, 6-0, 6-4, while Perez was given a bye. Perez fell in the quarterfinals to JMU’s Stephen Hardy, 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (8).

Barrer was also a part of the No. 3 singles action. In his first match, Barrer defeated Jonathan Sessom of Norfolk State, 6-1, 6-2, before recording a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Josep Baro of Campbell. Barrer fell in the semifinals to Chad Simpson of Liberty, 6-2, 6-2.

Closing out the Hens’ singles play, Kent made it to the finals match at No. 4 play. After being awarded a bye in the first round, Kent defeated Neal Mirchandani of Drexel, 6-7 (6), 6-4, 1-0 (5), and went on to blank George Washington’s Garrett Lockhart, 6-2, 6-1. Kent was edged by Campbell’s Loukas Wallaart, 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (7), in the championship.

The Hens’ women’s team will next compete on Oct. 6 at 2 p.m. when they host Saint Joseph’s (Pa.), while the men’s team returns to action on Oct. 10 at the Lehigh Tournament.
