SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The University of Delaware women’s tennis team aced its way through day one of competition at the Swarthmore Tournament on Saturday.
In doubles action, the Blue Hens’ three teams all advance to the championship matches of their respective flights tomorrow, each winning two matches.
In Flight A, the duo of Elena Berry (at right) and Montserrat Ripoll defeated Ellen Berlinghof and Courtney Boger of Johns Hopkins, 9-7, before knocking off Emily Rosenblum and Rachel Wallwork of Swarthmore, 8-1. Berry and Ripoll will face Delaware’s Ivana Petrich and Amanda Halstrom tomorrow in Flight A’s championship match. Petrich and Halstrom teamed to defeat Swarthmore’s Rosie DuBrin and Alice Laughlin, 8-4, and went on to record an 8-2 victory over Johns Hopkins’ Anita Bhamidipati and Several.
Amidst Flight B matches, the lone Delaware two tallied a pair of wins, also. Megan Doran and Samantha Carnall blanked Haverford’s Liz Gallo and Hannah Silverstein, 8-0, before tallying an 8-5 win over Hopkins’ Hirase and Vanessa Charubhumi.
Strong performaces were also evident in singles action as the Hens came out atop nine of the 12 maches in which they competed.
Berry secured a pair of wins during Flight A action in both Round One and Two. The senior, 2008 third team All-Colonial Athletic Association selection, posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Bhamidipati during Round One play before dominating Haverford’s Jaclyn Porter, 6-1, 6-1, in Round Two.
Also in Round One, Flight A action, Doran notched a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Rosenblum.
During Round One, Flight B play, Ripoll tallied a 6-1, 6-4 win over Johnson of Swarthmore. That same round, the Hens were victorious in each of their Flight C competitions. Junior Kristen Mueller beat out Hirase 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), Halstrom defeated Haverford’s Sarah Gibson 6-0, 6-1, and Carnall took a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Boger.
Closing out the rainy day of tennis, Delware notched two wins during Round Two, Flight C matches. Carnall blanked Dina Zingaro of Swarthmore 6-0, 6-0, and Halstrom defeated fellow Blue Hen Mueller 6-2, 6-2.
The Hens will compete in Day Two of the Swarthmore Tournament on Sunday, September 13. Matches will begin at 9 a.m.
