SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The University of Delaware duo of Megan Doran and Samantha Carnall notched a storybook come-from-behind Flight B doubles win in tennis action on Day Two of the Swarthmore Tournament on Sunday.
After trailing 7-1 to Johns Hopkins’ Krishnan and Ellen Berlinghoff, the team of Doran (top right) and Carnall (bottom right) fought-off five match points to win a tight 9-7 match.
Also in doubles action, two Delaware teams went head-to-head in the championship match of Flight A. Elena Berry and Montserrat Ripoll took on Ivana Petrich and Amanda Halstrom. Berry and Ripoll claimed bragging rights with an 8-4 victory.
In singles play, Delaware won seven of its eight matches. Leading the way for the Blue Hens, Duran blanked Haverford’s Karen Lavi, 6-0, 6-0 in Flight A action.
Amidst Flight B competition, Petrich and Ripoll each were victorious. Petrich defeated Swarthmore’s Rosie DuBrin 6-1, 6-0, while Ripol held Haverford’s Fumiko Shogase scoreless with a 6-0, 6-0 victory.
The Hens tallied three individual victories during Flight C. Kristen Mueller overpowered Sarah Gibson of Haverford 6-0, 6-0, Halstrom defeated Hopkins’ Hirase 6-2, 6-3, and Carnall trounced Haverford’s Celia Tong 6-0, 6-0.
Carnall and Halstrom were forced to compete for the Flight C championship. Carnall won the match 6-0, 6-2 to close out the afternoon’s play.
The Blue and Gold will return to action when they travel to the Baltimore for the Maryland Invitational Sept. 18-20.
