NEWARK, Del. - The University of Delaware women’s tennis team opened their 2009-10 campaign taking seven of the nine matches played during the non-scoring match against The College of New Jersey at the Delaware Field House on Saturday afternoon.
In doubles action, Delaware senior Elena Berry, a 2008 third team All-Colonial Athletic Association selection in both singles and doubles, teamed with junior Montserrat Ripoll in the #1 spot to blank senior Jackie Shtemberg and sophomore Felice Trinh, 8-0. Had the match been scored, the Blue Hens would have notched the doubles point, as freshman Amanda Halstrom made her collegiate debut matched with junior Megan Doran (at right) to tally an 8-5 victory in #3 doubles.
The Hens were victorious in five of the doubles matches as Doran led the way defeating senior Stefanie Haar of TCNJ in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 in #2 singles. Ripoll defeated Trinh and junior Ivana Petrich defeated freshman Paige Aiello in #3 and #4 doubles with score of 6-1, 6-4 and 6-1, 6-1, respectively.
Delaware sophomore Samantha Carnall blanked the Lions’ freshman Lauren Balsamo 6-0, 6-0 at the #5 spot, while Halstrom also registered a win at #6 singles defeating freshman Karisse Bendijo 7-5, 6-4.
