COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Junior Kristen Mueller sliced her way through Flight C singles play and won the championship match on Sunday of the three-day, University of Maryland Invitational.
Mueller (at right) was awarded a bye in the first round of Flight C play before defeating George Washington's Michele Style 6-2, 6-2 and Maryland's Jordan Harvey 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 in Rounds two and three, respectively. It was Georgetown's Nora Montgomery who Mueller came-from-behind to defeat 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 and clinch the Flight C title.
Delaware junior Megan Doran also faired well having defeated three Flight A opponents before being edged by Radford's Ivana Tomaic in the semifinals, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).
Doran defeated Mia Drobnjak of Radford 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, Alex Sebia of Georgetown 6-2, 6-3 and Colonial Athletic Association opponent Leah Demasters of James Madison, 6-1, 6-1, to earn her spot in the semis.
In other Flight A action, Delaware was riddled by injuries as junior Ivana Petrich retired early from her first match, while senior Elena Berry defeated her first opponent, Federica Longo of Nova Southeastern, 6-0, 6-1, before retiring from her second match.
Hens' sophomore Samantha Carnall and junior Montse Ripoll found success amidst their respective Flight B matches. Carnall notched a 6-2, 6-1 win over Nova Southeastern's Mary Crider before downing Howard's Akhimien 3-6, 6-0, 6-1. Carnall then fell in the quarterfinals to Simone Kalhorn of Syracuse 6-3, 6-1.
Ripoll tallied a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Nova Southeastern's Elisa Leeder before falling to JMU's Michelle Nguyen 6-0, 6-3.
In doubles action, the Delaware duo of Doran and Carnall went three-for-three winning each of their matches. On Friday the pair defeated Maryland's Eleonore Paillaud and Lauren Wolman 8-1, before sneaking past JMU's Kelly Maxwell and Kristin Nimitz, 9-8 (7-5) on Saturday.
Doran and Carnall defeated their final opponents, Oksana Krutiyenko and Julia Huschke of Maryland, 8-5 on Sunday.
Petrich teamed with freshman Amanda Halstrom on Friday for a 8-6 win over Howard's Brown and Michele Gee before falling on Saturday to the George Washington team of Mimi Hamling and Zoe Krohn, 8-4.
Ripoll and Mueller had a similar fate. They defeated Victoria Sekely and Sebia of Georgetown 8-3 on Saturday then fell to Yale's Elizabeth Epstein and Stephanie Kent, 8-4, on Sunday.
The Blue Hens will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 26 when they travel to Villanova University for a 12:30 p.m. match.
