BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The University of Delaware women’s tennis team is set to begin its Spring schedule with a dual meet this Sunday at Lehigh, 10 a.m.

The Blue Hens are coming off a Fall season in which they shut out both Villanova and Saint Joseph’s, 7-0 in dual meets and had impressive showings in the Swarthmore, Maryland Invitational and Sergio Tacchini Invitational tournaments. As a team, the Hens were 73-19 in singles play and 38-11 in doubles play in the Fall, and look to continue that success into the Spring.

Head Coach Laura Travis’s squad has a non-conference schedule that includes Lehigh, Georgetown, Mt. St. Mary’s, George Washinton, Lafayette, Mt Olive and UMBC. The Hens open the Colonial Athletic Association schedule with a visit to Hofstra on Mar. 27.

In the 2007-08 season, Delaware went 12-3 (5-0 CAA) in the regular season. The Hens earned a No. 5 seed and a first-round bye in the CAA Tournament, but lost 4-1 to Georgia State in the quarterfinals.

Delaware is led by junior Elena Berry (at right), sophomore Ivana Petrich and senior Amanda Campbell. The Blue Hens should also get major contributions from sophomore Megan Doran and freshman Jo Jo Gruber.

Berry played No. 1 singles and doubles throughout the Fall season and accumulated 12-3 and 13-4 records, respectively. From Bradenton, Fla., Berry won Flight I of the Swarthmore Tournament and advanced to round two of singles and doubles play in the ITA Northeast Regional this past Fall. She owns a 42-17 career record at Delaware.

Petrich, a native of Alberta, Calgary, dominated No. 2 and No. 3 singles play in the Fall as she cruised to a 12-2 record. Petrich won Flight 3 at Swarthmore, took third place at Flight B singles at Maryland and advanced to the semifinals of the Sergio Tacchini Tournament at Old Dominion. Just a sophomore, she owns a record of 33-5.

The only senior on the roster, Campbell ranks 10th on the school’s career singles win list with 52 and, at 64, is just five wins short of tying current assistant coach Susan Pollack for individual career doubles wins. Pollack and Campbell were the winningest doubles team in school history with a record of 34-8, including the season record-setting 22-6 mark in 2005-06. This Fall, Campbell went 10-3 in singles play and teamed up with Gruber to go 14-1 in doubles play.

Lehigh, of the Patriot League, has already played eight matches this Spring season and the Mountain Hawks are 3-5 heading into their home match today against Stony Brook. They recently ended a three-match skid on Mar. 3 when they beat Lewis University, 6-1.
