RICHMOND, Va. - - Leading the University of Delaware baseball team to a 3-1 record this past week, including a key Colonial Athletic Association series victory over Georgia State, freshman EJ Stoltzfus was named a CAA Co-Rookie of the Week, announced by the conference office on Monday.

Stoltzfus (at right) stepped into a fulltime starting position in the infield this week, and made the best of his opportunity. He started all four games at third base and made the move over to shortstop in two of the games while head coach Jim Sherman made late game adjustments.

During the four games, Stoltzfus hit 9-for-18 with three runs batted in and three runs scored. But he was even more impressive when it was most important, batting .538 (7-for-13) with two runs and two RBI’s over the weekend against Georgia State. He also was reliable in the field against the Panthers, adding six assists and four putouts in the key series with first place implications.

Starting off the week on Tuesday in the Liberty Bell Classic, the Brigantine, N.J. native batted 2-for-5, knocking in what would be the winning run in the seventh inning, if it weren’t for Temple’s comeback in the ninth.

In game one against Georgia State, the freshman batted 2-for-4, scoring the eventual game-winning run during the five-run third inning. He also scored a run on Saturday, going 1-for-4 on the afternoon. He ended his week with his best game, tallying four singles in a 4-for-5 day, knocking in two runners, and extending the ninth inning rally with a single over the head of the first baseman, driving in the game’s final run.

On the season, Stoltzfus has splayed in 16 games with six starts. If he had as many at-bats as the everyday starters, Stoltzfus would be leading the team with a .406 batting average. He is hitting 13-for-32 with five runs scored and four RBI’s.

Delaware (15-13, 8-4 CAA) remains in first place in the CAA, sitting in the top stop with James Madison and UNC Wilmington. All three teams have a .667 winning percentage in the conference, but have all played a different amount of games. The Blue Hens will square off against UNC Wilmington this weekend at Wilmington.

Towson’s Pat Fitzgerald shared weekly honors with Stoltzfus as Co-Rookie of the Week, while Old Dominions Josh Wright was named the conference’s Player of the Week and Logan Billbrough earned the Pitcher of the Week award.

Prior to their trip to North Carolina, Stoltzfus will lead the Blue Hens in two nonconference battles this week, starting with Lehigh on Tuesday in the second round of the Liberty Bell Classic. They then return home to take on UMBC on Wednesday. First pitch on Tuesday is slated for 3:30 p.m.
