Blue Hens Named the College Baseball Insider Northeast Team of the Week

RICHMOND, Va. - - Sitting in first place in the Colonial Athletic Association, the University of Delaware baseball team was named the CollegeBaseballInsider.com Northeast Team of the Week on Tuesday.
The Blue Hens are coming off a 3-1 week where they defeated Lehigh to reach the final of the Liberty Bell Classic tonight at the Philadelphia Phillies home ballpark, Citizens Bank Park, against Villanova. Delaware is looking to defend its crown, as they defeated Lehigh last season in the final for their record seventh Liberty Bell Classic crown.
Delaware (18-14, 10-5 CAA) also took two of three from CAA foe UNC Wilmington this past weekend, vaulting them into sole possession of first place in the standings. UNC Wilmington, James Madison and Delaware were all log jammed at the top of the conference coming into this weekend, and Delaware is the only team to come out of the weekend with a winning record.
The pitching staff was superb this past week, allowing a measly 10 earned runs in the four games and only five in the three victories. The Blue Hens shutout Lehigh, 5-0, for their first shutout of the season, and first dating back to last season against Temple on April 21. Eric Young allowed on run in 7.1 innings of work on Friday, and the Seahawks finally got to the staff with four earned on Saturday.
For the week, the Delaware pitching staff comprised a 2.57 ERA, tallying 27 strikeouts to only eight walks in 35 innings of work. The Hens are third in the conference in team ERA for the season, bolstering a 4.54 earned run average in 32 games.
Oregon State was named the CBI Team of the Week after going 4-0, including a three-game sweep over fifth ranked Arizona State. Other regional winners included Arkansas, Michigan State, and No. 13 Cal State Fullerton.
The Blue Hens get to play in two top of the line stadiums in the area this week, after tonight against Villanova in Citizens Bank Park, the Hens will travel to the Camden Rivershark’s home ballpark, Campbell’s Field, to take on Saint Joseph’s on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
