Anderson, Dameron, Ulaky Named Blue Hen Baseball Captains for 2011
January 13, 2011
NEWARK, Del. - - The University of Delaware baseball team began its quest to capture the 2011 Colonial Athletic Association conference crown earlier this month with its preseason schedule, and head coach Jim Sherman named three seniors as captains to carry the Blue Hens along the way.
Infielders Dave Anderson and Steve Ulaky are joined by outfielder Pat Dameron who comprise the senior trio who have combined for seven letters, two First Team All-CAA, and two Second Team ABCA All-East Region awards.
“We are proud to have these three young men represent the long tradition of captains of Delaware baseball...they are outstanding players, as well as great representatives for the university," Sherman said.
Anderson (above right) started all but two games at shortstop for the Blue Hens last season, while batting .303 in 188 at-bats. He was fifth on the team in runs, crossing the plate on 40 different occasions. His junior campaign ended with 57 hits, 12 going for doubles, three homeruns and 28 runs batted in. He reached base an extra 18 times on walks, and led the team by being hit 12 times by the pitch.
Defensively, he was second on the team in assists with 122, and ended with a .929 fielding percentage. He will continue to start at shortstop for the Blue Hens this season.
Dameron (at left) started all 51 games in left field last year for a Blue Hens team that went 27-24 overall last year. He was third on the team with a .353 batting average in 204 at-bats. His 19 doubles, 14 homeruns and 59 RBI’s all rank second on the team, most of which came from the clean-up spot in the lineup. He reached base 43.3 percent of the time he stepped to the plate, as he led the team in drawing free bases with 26. He will continue to play left field for Sherman in 2011.
Ulaky (below right) was second on the team while batting .374 while playing 49 games as the designated hitter and in right field. He finished with the second most multiple hits games on the team, registering more than one hit in 23 games. He was second on the team with
19 doubles, and raked in 37 RBI’s on his way to a First Team All-CAA selection and a Second Team ABCA All-East Region nod. He ended his junior campaign with 68 hits, enough for fifth on the team. Ulaky will step back out onto the field in 2011, as Sherman will look for him to play first base.
The Blue Hens open their spring schedule with a three game trip south to UNC Greensboro starting on February 18. They then air out to the west coast with a four game series against Arizona State from Feb. 25-27. A single contest against UMBC on March 1 is the final road game before they open at home against St. Joseph’s on March 2.
