RICHMOND, Va. - - University of Delaware freshman right-handed pitcher Chad Kuhl earned his first collegiate win on Sunday, and earned the team’s first Colonial Athletic Association weekly honor as he was named the Rookie of the Week today, announced by the conference office.
A local product from Bear, Del., Kuhl (at right) pitched seven shutout innings against Hofstra, as the baseball team went on to win 7-2. He allowed only four hits on the afternoon, and recorded seven strikeouts, while only walking three batters. The win helped the Blue Hens take the season series from Hofstra, as they dropped the first game on Friday, but came back to take the two games over the weekend.
Kuhl was making his third start of the season, but his fifth appearance. He quickly made his way onto the conference weekend starting rotation, making his first conference appearance last weekend against George Mason. He also gained valuable experience with his first start of the season against then ranked no. 9 Arizona State.
For the season Kuhl is 1-1 in those five appearances, allowing 11 runs (eight earned) in 20.1 innings for a 3.54 ERA. Following his seven-strikeout performance on Sunday, he now leads the team in that department, recording 17 on the year.
Joining Kuhl this week with the other CAA honors were Georgia State’s Mark Micowski, James Madison’s DJ Brown, and William & Mary’s Brett Koehler. Micowski was named the Player of the Week after leading his Panthers to a perfect 5-0 week. Brown and Koehler shared Co-Pitcher of the Week awards.
Kuhl and the rest of the Blue Hens are back on the diamond on Tuesday, as they travel south on Route 1 to take on interstate rival Delaware State for the second time this season. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
