NEWARK, Del. - - After winning the first game of the series, and six outs away from securing the series, the University of Delaware baseball team dropped a pair to William & Mary at Bob Hannah Stadium, 6-0 and 4-3, on Saturday afternoon.
Delaware (12-12, 6-3 CAA) was leading game two 3-2 heading into the eighth inning, but William & Mary (13-14, 7-5 CAA) rallied to put two on the board in the inning, winning the rubber match and taking the series.
Once again, the Blue Hens came out of the gates firing on all cylinders as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead through the first three innings.
Delaware got on the board in the first inning of game two, starting with a one out rally. Pat Dameron (above right) walked with one out in the inning to get things going. Steve Ulaky followed with a double down the left field line, moving Dameron to third. Nick Ferdinand started the scoring with a sharp RBI groundout to the shortstop, allowing Dameron to score.
After William & Mary knotted the score with a run in the top of the second, Dameron regained the lead for the Blue Hens. With DJ Long on first base following an error, Dameron sent a 2-1 pitch over the scoreboard in right field for his second homerun of the season.
Starter Chad Kuhl settled into the game from that point until the sixth inning, where the defense came up large for the staff. With two men on, pinch hitter Stephen Arcure doubled just into the first base bag and down the right field line, easily scoring Ryan Lindemuth. Now with one out and the bases loaded, reliever Corey Crispell induced a 6-3 double play, getting out of the inning with only the one run.
Still at 3-2, William & Mary got runners on second and third no outs in the eighth. After Crispell struck out Arcure, Jonathan Slattery laid down a safety squeeze bunt, sacrificing the tying the run home. Now with two outs and a runner at third, Tadd Bower dribbled one through the hole through the right side, giving the Tribe their first lead of the ballgame.
The Blue Hens went quietly in the eighth and ninth as the Tribe came away with the series.
Game one was a dominating pitching performance from Tribe starter Logan Billbrough, as he threw a complete game one hitter, leading the Tribe to a 6-0 victory. The Blue Hens were connecting against Billbrough, but were unable to find the green as Billbrough only recorded four strikeouts on the afternoon.
Nick Ferdinand singled through the right side in the second inning, barely under the glove of first baseman Bower for what turned out to be the lone hit of the afternoon for the home team.
Billbrough gave up two walks on the afternoon, but did not allow a runner to reach second base, getting the Blue Hens to hit into two double plays. Nick Ferdinand tried to get things rolling in the second, but was caught attempting to steal second with a bullet from catcher Chris Forsten.
The Tribe got all the runs they needed in the fourth as they loaded the bases with the first three batters of the inning. With no outs, Bower took a 2-0 off speed pitch that was down and in and deposited it over the right field wall for the grand slam.
Danny Gatto took the loss in game one, falling to 1-2 on the season. He pitched 5.1 innings, giving up six runs (five earned) on six hits. Nick Young came on and pitched the remaining 3.2 innings, only giving up one base hit.
Ferdinand and Ulaky are the only Hens to record two hits on the afternoon, as Ferdinand also tallied a hit in game two. Ulaky finished 2-for-3 in game two. Dameron led the team scoring two runs and knocking in his two RBI’s on his two run homerun.
Delaware returns to action on Tuesday, as they take on Temple in the first round of the Liberty Bell Classic at Bob Hannah Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
