NEWARK, Del. - - Typically a pitcher and last year’s Friday conference starter, Eric Young scored the game-winning run in the sixth to lead the Gray squad, 8-6, in the University of Delaware baseball team’s Blue/Gray World Series on Tuesday at Bob Hannah Stadium.
Tied at 6-6, Young (above right) led off the inning with a single into left field off freshman Eric Sawyer. After advancing to third on a throwing error, newcomer Cameron Travalini flied out to left but deep enough to score Young for the go-ahead run. That was Young’s lone hit for the afternoon.
Danny Gatto got the nod for the Gray team, throwing three scoreless innings before getting touched in the fourth and fifth. He threw 4.1 innings, giving up six runs on seven hits for the no decision.
Matt Soren started on the hill for the Blue team, throwing four innings while giving up six runs on six hits.
Luke Alicknavitch pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless baseball, getting out of two on, one out jam in the fifth to earn the victory. Sawyer gave up two runs in two innings for the loss.
Junior DJ long and sophomore Alex Mottle led the Gray team with two hits a piece, while Travalini and classmate Brock Niggebrugge each had two RBI’s.
Yezzo led the Blue team offensively for the second day in a row, going 3-for-3 with two RBI’s and two runs scored.
The win was the series clincher for the Gray squad, as the intrasquad World Series started as a best-of-three matchup. Nonetheless, game three will be played on Wednesday at Bob Hannah Stadium. Game time is slated for 3:30 p.m.
