Five University of Delaware Baseball Standouts Named to All-Colonial Athletic Association Teams

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The University of Delaware baseball squad had five of its team members - Corey Crispell, Alex Maruri, Devon Pearson, Tyler Powell and Jimmy Yezzo - represented on the 2012 All-Colonial Athletic Association squads announced at the conference awards banquet Tuesday night.
Crispell and Maruri (at right) were named to the All-CAA second team while Pearson and Yezzo were selected to the All-CAA third team and Powell earned a spot on the All-Rookie Team. The selections were based on votes from the coaching staffs of the 11 CAA schools.
The banquet was held on the eve of the 2012 CAA Baseball Championship which begins on Wednesday at James Madison’s Veteran’s Memorial Park in Harrisonburg, Va. The double-elimination tournament will feature #1 UNCW, #2 Hofstra, #3 Delaware, #4 George Mason, #5 VCU an #6 Towson. Delaware will take on Towson in the opening round at 3:30 p.m.
Crispell (at left), a redshirt senior from Hatboro, Pa. (Hatboro-Horsham HS) who will start the CAA opener vs. Towson, led the Blue Hens with six victories for the second-straight season. He led the UD starting staff with a 3.75 ERA and paced UD with 86.1 innings pitched. The 6-4 right-hander was also named CAA Pitcher of the Week on May 14.
Maruri, a junior from the Bronx, N.Y. (Stepinac HS), has been Delaware’s top hitter so far this season with a .336 batting average. He also leads the team with a .438 on-base percentage in 44 games this spring and has also registered 10 doubles and 21 RBI.
Pearson (below right), a senior from Reedsville, Pa. (Indian Valley HS), leads the team with a 1.61 ERA in 24 appearances out the bullpen. The southpaw owns a 4-1 record with six saves while holding the opposition to a .267 batting average in 44.2 innings on the mound. 
Powell (below left, a freshman from Marlton, N.J. (Cherokee HS), has started 47 games for the Blue Hens this season in the outfield. He ranks second on the team with a .329 batting average, ranks third on the team with 53 base hits, and has knocked in 21 runs. The freshman outfielder was also named CAA Rookie of the Week on February 28.
Yezzo (below right), a sophomore from Cherry Hill, N.J. (Bishop Eustace HS) has paced the UD offense with six home runs and a .500 slugging percentage in 44 games this season. The power-hitting first baseman is third on the team with a .329 batting average and ranks second with 35 RBI. He was a CAA Player of the Week selection on April 16. 
Hofstra outfielder Danny Poma was tabbed as the conference Player of the Year after leading the CAA in batting average (.435), hits (97), runs (76), doubles (31) and stolen bases (26).
William & Mary’s Matt Davenport was named the Pitcher of the Year after going 7-5 with a 1.73 ERA in a league-leading 109.1 innings pitched.
Hofstra second baseman Matt Ford earned the Defensive Player of the Year award while Northeastern freshman standout Jason Vosler was tabbed the Rookie of the Year.
Mark Scalf and the UNCW coaching staff took home the Coach of the Year Award after leading the Seahawks to the top seed in the upcoming CAA Tournament. Now in his 20th season at the helm, Scalf has led UNCW to a 24-6 record in league play.
