NEWARK, Del. – A Blue squad five-run ninth inning was not enough as the Gold squad claimed a 7-5 victory in the University of Delaware baseball team’s Blue/Gold World Series Friday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.
The Blue squad had a commanding 7-0 lead heading into the ninth inning, but the Gold squad fell short despite putting together a five-run rally in the top of the ninth inning.
“We had another very competitive game today,” Delaware head coach Jim Sherman said of today’s performance. “Although the Blue Team led 7-0, the Gold Team just would not go away, they battled back and just fell short.”
“We saw some great things today in all phases of the game,” Sherman added about his squad’s growth during the fall ball schedule. “We still have a ways to go but these last two games have been very encouraging.”
Standouts offensively today for the Blue team included; team captain Nick Ferdinand (at right), who collected 1 double, 1 triple and 3 runs scored, Jake Clark went 3-for-3 with 1 triple, 1 home run, 2 RBI, 1 run scored and a stolen base.
For the Gold Team, Zach Lopes collected a triple with one RBI and one run scored.
Earning the win for the Blue squad was right-hander Matt Soren, who threw four shutout innings on the mound with 2 hits, 2 wals and 3 strikeouts. The Gold squad’s Danny Gatto suffered the defeat after the right-hander yielded two earned runs on 4 hits, 2 walks and 2 strikeouts in four innings on the bump.
Game Three of the Blue/Gold World Series will be on Monday, October 15, with first pitch scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Bob Hannah Stadium. Starting for the Blue squad will be right-hander Chad Kuhl and for the Gold squad will be Mike Gillespie.
