Athlete photoNEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware Baseball team used great pitching and defense to defeat Harford Community College, 6-3, in a fall exhibition game Friday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.

The contest was the last one of the Fall for the Blue Hens who now have their sights set on the upcoming 2013 season.

“It took us a while to get going offensively but our pitching and defense gave us every opportunity to win the game,” Delaware head coach Jim Sherman said of the effort. “Great clubs always have great pitching and a fundamentally sound defense; these are two ingredients we will need if we want to accomplish the goals we set for ourselves this upcoming season.”

On the mound, the Blue Hens were led by: Matt Soren, who yielded one earned run on two hits and five strikeouts in three innings on the mound. Danny Gatto added three scoreless frames with one hit and one strikeout while Brandon Hinkle (at right) added two hitless innings of relief with two walks and five strikeouts.

Blue Hen offensive standouts included; Nick Ferdinand, who went 3-for-6 with 1 double, 4 RBI and 1 run scored. Jimmy Yezzo added two hits, that included one double and two RBI while Brock Niggebrugge went 2-for-3 with one run scored.

The current Blue Hen squad will begin its 2013 season on February 15, 2013, when they travel to the USA Baseball Complex in Cary, NC to take on the Temple University Owls at 3:30 p.m.
