Delaware Baseball Duo, Yezzo and Kuhl, Garner National Accolades During Summer Baseball Season

NEWARK, Del. – A pair of University of Delaware baseball players, junior starting right-handed pitcher Chad Kuhl (bottom left) and junior third baseman Jimmy Yezzo (at right) were nationally honored by Perfect Game for their outstanding performance during the summer baseball season in the Valley Baseball League.
Perfect Game named Yezzo a second team All-American Summer Baseball League third baseman behind Troy University’s Danny Collins in addition to being the No. 2 Top Prospect in the Virginia-based Valley Baseball League.
Playing for the Winchester Royals, Yezzo hit .362 (79-for-218) with 16 home runs and 62 RBI in 52 games. Yezzo was named to the VBL All-Star Game and earned two VBL Player of the Week selections. The Royals posted a 36-16 record and won the VBL Northern Division title before losing to Harrisonburg in the championship round.
“Jimmy has turned into one of the most fierce hitters in NCAA Division I baseball,” Sherman remarked. “Through all of his hard work, he had a great sophomore season and a great summer.”
Yezzo, the 2012 CAA Baseball Tournament Most Valuable Player, returns as the Blue Hens’ leading slugger after he produced a .358 (67-for-187) batting average with team-leading eight home runs and 46 RBI in 50 games.
Kuhl was ranked the No. 3 Top Prospect in the VBL by Perfect Game after he posted a 4-0 record with a 1.11 ERA (5 ER/40.2 IP) and 39 strikeouts in six starts for the New Market Rebels. The 6-3 right-hander was also a VBL All-Star Game selection for the Southern Division.
“Chad has worked extremely hard to make himself into a pro prospect,” Delaware head coach Jim Sherman said. “He deserves this recognition after all of his hard work.”
Kuhl anchors the Blue Hens starting pitching staff as the only returning weekend starter. During his sophomore campaign, Kuhl posted a 5-5 record with a 4.42 ERA (38 ER/77.1 IP) and a team-high 64 strikeouts in five starts.
Looking to build from their runner-up finish at the 2012 Colonial Athletic Association Baseball Tournament, the Blue Hens will playtheir annual Blue/Gold World Series beginning on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 3:30 p.m.
In addition, the Blue Hens will play fall-season games against Wilmington University on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 1 p.m. and Friday, Oct. 26 at 2 p.m. at Bob Hannah Stadium.
