Delaware Baseball Hosts Delaware State in Route One Rivalry Doubleheader Wednesday

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware baseball continues mid-week action with a Route One Rivalry doubleheader as Delaware State University visits Newark on Wednesday, March 13 at 1:00 p.m. at Bob Hannah Stadium.
Wednesday’s game was originally scheduled to be played in Dover, but due to the postponement of March 6 game, the two schools decided to play two, seven-inning contests in Newark.
Delaware (8-5) looks to return to the win column after snapping a five-game winning a with Sunday’s loss at Towson in Colonial Athletic Association competition while Delaware State (8-5) is riding a three-game winning streak after a weekend sweep against St. Peter’s.
The Route One Rivalry began in 1993 and has seen the Blue Hens produce a 36-9 record over the Hornets. In 2012, DSU swept UD in the two games played by a combined score of 14-7. The victories snapped a Blue Hen seven-game winning streak.
In game one of Wednesday’s doubleheader the Blue Hens will turn to left-hander Brandon Hinkle (0-0, 0.00 earned-run average). For the second game of the double-dip, UD will hand the ball to right-hander Connor Hibbs (1-0, 7.94 ERA).
Through 13 games, the Blue Hens possess a .323-team batting average (146-for-452) while averaging 6.92 runs scored per game. Zach Lopes leads the CAA with a .500 batting average (15-for-30) and DJ Long paces the squad with three home runs. Nick Ferdinand and Jimmy Yezzo share the RBI lead with 15 apiece. Ferdinand and Yezzo also rank in the CAA Top 10 with a .429 batting average. Joe Giacchino enters the doubleheader riding a nine-game hitting streak and has hits in 11 of 12 games played.
Delaware’s pitching staff has tossed 115 innings on the mound with a 5.01 earned-run average. The reliving duo of Stephen Richter and Matt Soren has combined for a 2-0 record and one save in 10 appearances. They own a 1.41 ERA with 27 strikeouts in 19.2 innings pitched.
Delaware State’s pitching staff owns a 4.67 earned-run average through 106 innings pitched in 13 games. Jordan Elliot leads the Hornets with a 2-0 record and 0.43 ERA (1 ER/21.0 IP) and 17 strikeouts. Reliever Zach Candeloro is 1-0 with a 1.69 ERA (1 ER/5.1 IP).
The Hornets have an eye-popping .320-team batting average (133-for-416) while averaging 6.77 runs scored per game. Aaron Nardone leads DSU with a .409 batting average and a team-high 12 runs batted in. Cameron Cecil has a .400 batting averages (16-for-40) while JP Fry has a team-high 19 hits on the season.
Following the mid-week doubleheader, Delaware will continue CAA play with a three-game weekend series versus William & Mary on Friday, March 15, at 3:00 p.m. at Bob Hannah Stadium.
