NEWARK, Del. -- New University of Delaware field hockey head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof and his staff will host a 2011 Spring Fun Play Day Clinic on Saturday, Feb. 26, at the Delaware Field House.
The Blue Hens welcome all girls ages 10-18 to come out and learn from the Delaware players and coaching staff during two sessions of play. The event will include shooting drills, scrimmages, and tournament play. Specific goalkeeping coaching will be provided.
The Play Day will be held at the Delaware Field House, located on South College Ave. on the UD Nelson Athletics Complex. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. with the morning session set for 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. After a lunch break, the afternoon session will be held from 1:30 p.m. until 4 p.m.
The event is designed to provide young field hockey athletes with an opportunity to learn new skills, participate in drills, and meet the Blue Hen players and UD field hockey coaching staff. Throughout the day, there will be shooting drills and small game situations and scrimmages which will give the participants a chance to interact with the Blue Hens.
"We are excited about offering this fun and top-notch field hockey event to those players who want to come out to enjoy and learn more about the game of field hockey,” said van de Kerkhof, who comes to Delaware with an extensive international and collegiate coaching background, including serving the last five years as head coach at nationally-ranked Michigan State. “They will get a taste of what it is like playing and coaching at the next level up from high school and club field hockey. This is another opportunity for Blue Hen field hockey to promote and develop our sport here on the East Coast."
Interested participants must register by Feb. 18, 2011 by sending in the registration form that is available on the UD website at: www.bluehens.com/teams/field-hockey or from the UD staff. Forms and the $30 registration fee should be sent to the Delaware Field Hockey Office, Delaware Field House, Newark, DE 19716. Checks should be made payable to the “University of Delaware”.
Participants will receive a confirmation email once they are registered. Each player must bring their own field hockey stick, shin guards, and mouth guard. Goalkeepers must provide their own equipment. Sports clothing and either sneakers or turf shoes should be worn. Each participant is responsible for bringing their own lunch.
