RICHMOND, Va. - - Leading scorer and point getter for the University of Delaware field hockey team, freshman Kelsey McKee was named the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week after scoring two more goals this weekend, announced by the conference office on Tuesday.
Delaware (6-8, 1-3 CAA) dropped a pair of conference games on the road this past weekend, falling to Northeastern, 4-2, and Hofstra, 7-2. McKee recorded a goal in each contest to earn her first individual CAA Rookie of the Week honor. She was named a Co-Rookie of the Week on August 30.
On Friday against Northeastern, McKee tied the game at 1-1 exactly 13 minutes into the contest. She took a stick-stop from Kayla Schweitzer at the top of the circle off a penalty corner, and blasted home her seventh goal of the year.
As a back, McKee records most of her shots as the strike on corners and she was able to get off five shots against the Huskies. Three of the shots were put on frame.
On Sunday, McKee cut the early deficit in half with her third penalty stroke of the season. After Pride goalkeeper Amanda Heyde saved a shot by Tory Sharpless, the ball was illegal cleared, awarding the Hens a stroke. McKee has converted on all three of her stroke opportunities this season.
The rookie has started in all 14 games as the center back for the Blue Hens, and leads the team with 20 points. She has tallied eight goals, while adding four assists for the season.
The Gap, Pa. native has recorded at least one point in seven of the team’s last eight games dating back to September 18. The lone game without a mark was a 5-0 shutout to #1 Old Dominion. McKee has scored a goal, or collected an assist in all but four matches this year.
The Blue Hens are off from CAA play this weekend, but will stay on the road as they travel to battle Kookaburra / NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll no. 16 ranked Albany on Sunday, October 16. The game is scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m.
