2012 Complete Schedule

NEWARK, Del. -- No one will ever accuse second-year University of Delaware field hockey head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof of putting together an easy schedule for his Blue Hen squad.

Van de Kerkhof announced his team’s 2012 schedule Wednesday and the slate - one of the most ambitious in school history - is loaded with top-notch opponents, including five teams that advanced to last year’s NCAA Tournament and seven that were selected in the final regular season Top 20 poll.

That is all part of the rebuilding plan for van de Kerkhof, who led the Blue Hens to a record 9-11 and a berth in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament in his rookie season a year ago. He will welcome back seven starters and the top three scorers from last year’s squad and will add a talented group of exciting newcomers to the mix.

Season tickets are on sale now for just $30 for adults and just $20 for youths 17 and under and seniors 60 and older. Call 302-831-2257 or visit the UD Season Ticket Office in its new home at the Bob Carpenter Center to purchase tickets and get in on all the fun that the upcoming season has to offer.

Among the opponents in 2012 will be last fall’s NCAA national runner-up North Carolina as well as national semifinalist Old Dominion, a Michigan team that advanced to the quarterfinals, and tournament qualifiers Princeton and Northeastern.

The Tar Heels finished the 2011 regular season ranked No. 1 in the nation in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll while Old Dominion was No. 2, Michigan was No. 18, Boston University was No. 13, Albany was No. 14, Northeastern was No. 16, and Wake Forest was No. 18. The Hens will face all seven of those teams this fall.

Highlighting the home schedule at Rullo Stadium will be visits from North Carolina Sept. 7, America East powers Boston University for the season opener Aug. 24, and from Albany two days later on Aug. 26. Other home opponents will be Saint Joseph’s on Sept. 5, Monmouth on Sept. 12, Northeastern on Oct. 5, Hofstra on Oct. 7, and James Madison on Oct. 26.

Road games will be played at Central Michigan on Aug. 31, at Michigan on Sept. 1, at Temple on Sept. 14, at Princeton on Sept. 16, at Appalachian State on Sept. 22, at Wake Forest on Sept. 23, at William & Mary for the CAA opener on Sept. 28, at Old Dominion on Sept. 30, and at Drexel on Oct. 19.

The Colonial Athletic Association Tournament will be played at the site of the highest seed on Nov. 1-4.
