• 2011 Delaware Season Statistics

At Delaware: Athletic third-year player who has junior eligibility…has played in three career games in injury-plagued career…has excellent speed and size…has put on 25 lbs. since arriving at Delaware…projected as the team’s No. 3 outside linebacker behind Kyle Hunte and Kyle Gayle entering the 2011 season…size and athleticism should allow him to be a fixture on Blue Hen special teams units.

2010 Season: Saw action in three games for the Blue Hens, primarily on special teams...registered three tackles as a redshirt freshman...played in opener vs. West Chester and then recorded one tackle vs. South Dakota State before missing the next 12 games with injuries…returned for FCS national championship game vs. Eastern Washington and recorded two tackles on special teams...member of a Delaware defense that led the nation in scoring defense at 12.1 points per game and ranked No. 5 in total defense (280.7 yards per game)…team went 12-3 and advanced to the FCS national title game under head coach K.C. Keeler.

2009 Season: One of seven true freshmen to take snaps in a game…saw action as a reserve linebacker in season opener vs. West Chester but did not see action after that and retained freshman eligibility…did not record any statistics…team went 6-5 for Keeler.

High School: Played linebacker and tight end at Highland Springs High School for head coach Loren Johnson...starred at same high school that produced current Blue Hen defenders Andrew Harrison and Marcus Burley...led team to a three-year record of 24-7, including a 10-1 mark and a district title as a junior in 2007...team also advanced to the playoffs in 2006...posted 200 tackles, 10 sacks, six forced fumbles, and two interceptions for his career...had 65 tackles and five sacks as a junior...two-time all-district selection at linebacker in 2007 and 2008...named to all-academic team...also competed as a sprinter in track and field...National Honor Society.

Personal: Carl Anthony Smith...nickname is "Popeye"...born January 24, 1991...son of Carl Smith Jr. and Jori Ferguson...has five stepbrothers and stepsisters - all younger than him...Black American Studies major at Delaware with a minor in leadership...hobbies include videography.
