RICHMOND, Va. -- University of Delaware freshman running back Andrew Pierce (at right) earned his sixth Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week citation this week after leading the Blue Hens to a 48-0 victory over Towson last Saturday at Delaware Stadium.

Pierce, a native of Bridgeton, N.J. (Cumberland Regional HS), will lead the No. 2/1 ranked Blue Hens (8-1, 5-1 CAA) into a key Colonial Athletic Association clash this Saturday at #14/13 Massachusetts (6-3, 4-2 CAA) at 1 p.m. in Amherst, Mass.

In the win over Towson, Pierce ran 16 times for 79 yards and scored two touchdowns - a 24-yarder in the second quarter and a three-yard burst in the third stanza - to lead the Blue Hen attack that piled up a season-high 589 total yards.

Pierce has now won seven CAA awards this season after also earning CAA Offensive Player of the Week honors for his performance vs. Duquesne. He also was honored as Rookie of the Week against West Chester, South Dakota State, Duquesne, Maine, and Rhode Island. He was also named The Sports Network National Freshman of the Week twice earlier this season.

In addition to Pierce, Rhode Island QB Steve Probst was named CAA Offensive Player of the Week, Massachusetts LB Tyler Holmes was named Defensive Player of the Week, and Rhode Island DL was named Special Teams Player of the Week.

Pierce currently leads the CAA and all NCAA Division I FCS freshmen in rushing yards with 1,014 yards (112.7 per game), scoring (8.7 points per game), and all-purpose yardage (124.93). He has established Delaware freshmen records for rushing yards in season and rushing touchdowns in a season (12) and also tied the UD record for fewest games to reach 1,000 yards in a season (nine) and set a new record for fewest games to reach 1,000 in a career, breaking the previous mark of 11.
