NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware football team wrapped up its first week of the 2012 preseason on Sunday by competing in its first scrimmage in front of a few hundred Blue Hen fans at sun-drenched Delaware Stadium.
Junior running back Julian Laing (at right), competing in his first season for the Blue Hens after transferring from Lackawanna Junior College, was the offensive star of the day by scoring three touchdowns on the ground. Senior quarterback Tim Donnelly also connected with sophomore wide receiver Michael Johnson for a 15-yard score while junior Sean Baner nailed four early field goals, including one from 51 yards. Donnelly, along with junior Trevor Sasek and sophomore transfer Trent Hurley, all saw extensive time at the quarterback position.
The Blue Hen defense was also impressive on the day, making two interceptions including one by freshman Craig Brodsky.
“I think we have enough talent to compete in the league,” said 11th-year Blue Hen head coach K.C. Keeler. “Trent (Hurley) had one of his best days of camp so far, and Tim (Donnelly) and Trevor (Sasek) did some nice things as well. Nobody has seized the starting quarterback spot yet, and we will have to evaluate the tape as we move forward.”
“Julian (Laing) had some fumbles early in camp, and it’s a testament to him that he didn’t let that affect him today,” Keeler said. “We are in good shape at the running back position, and I’ve been really pleased with the improvement of the offensive line.”
Delaware will be off on Monday to take part in Media/Photo Day festivities at Delaware Stadium beginning at 10 a.m. All fans are invited to the free event to talk with the players and coaches, take photographs, and get autographs.
The Blue Hens will return to practice on Tuesday, with their second scrimmage set for Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Delaware Stadium.
