NEWARK, Del. -- New University of Delaware football head coach Dave Brock, who was hired to lead the Blue Hens back on Jan. 18, announced Wednesday the signing of 13 outstanding high school recruits who have signed NCAA National Letters of Intent to attend UD on a scholarship and compete for the Blue Hens this coming fall.
In addition to the 13 recruits, Brock (at right) also announced the addition of transfers Jordan Thomas from Rutgers University and linebacker Kennedy Ogbonna from ASA Community College in New York.
The group also includes former Delaware high school All-State pick Eric Patton, who sat out the 2012 season as a greyshirt. All three are currently enrolled at the University and will take part in spring drills which begin in April. Thomas and Ogbonna will each have junior eligibility while Patton will have freshman eligibility.
The 16 newcomers hale from nine different states, including five from Pennsylvania, three from Florida, two from New Jersey, and one each from Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, New York, and the District of Columbia.
The list of newcomers also includes five linebackers, three defensive backs, three offensive linemen, two running backs, two defensive lineman, one quarterback, and one wide receiver. Eight players from the group earned All-State honors while many of them served as team co-captains and earned academic awards.
“This is an exciting day for the Delaware football family,” said Brock. “Any time there are additions to your family it is something special. It will always be important for us to bring in the right people and I think today we have brought in quality people and quality players.
“The entire process over the last two weeks has been a terrific experience,” said Brock, who spent his first several weeks as head coach visiting high school recruits who had committed to Delaware in the fall. I got the chance to meet with these student-athletes and their families and listen to them talk about why they want to come to the University of Delaware. I was impressed and I’m excited about their futures and for the future of Delaware football.”
Brock takes over a Delaware team that is coming off a 5-6 record in 2012 under former head coach K.C. Keeler but returns 10 starters on offense and 12 players with starting experience on the defensive side.
Among the returnees is Walter Payton National Player of the Year Award nominee in running back Andrew Pierce as well as All-CAA selections Bobby Kennedy and Brandon Heath on the offensive line, cornerback Travis Hawkins, and 2012 CAA and ECAC Defensive Rookie of the Year Jeff Williams at linebacker.
