NEWARK, Del. -- After a pair of impressive performances against La Salle and Howard, University of Delaware men’s basketball freshman guard Khalid Lewis was named the College Sports Madness CAA Player of the Week on Monday.

Lewis averaged 13.5 points, 3.0 steals and 2.0 assists during the Blue Hens’ two games, a 70-66 home win over La Salle on Dec. 19 and an 88-83 overtime loss to Howard on Dec. 22. He scored a career-high 18 points, all in the second half, to lead Delaware over the Explorers, going 5 of 6 from the field and 6 of 8 from the free throw line. Lewis also posted game-highs of four assists and three steals in the victory, while playing 33 minutes of action. With Delaware up one point and 30 seconds remaining Lewis stripped La Salle’s Tyreek Duran on a drive to the basket, was immediately fouled, and hit two free throws to make it a three-point game.

Lewis went on to score nine points, all but one in the second period, and added three more steals while playing 34 minutes Thursday at Howard.

Lewis has started all 10 games at point guard during his rookie campaign with the Blue Hens, leading the squad with 31 assists and 10 steals. Lewis, who plays the second most minutes on the team at 33.2 per contest, ranks fourth on UD by averaging 7.3 points per outing. He also currently is ninth in the Colonial Athletic Association with 3.1 assists per game and a 1.3 assist/turnover ratio.

Lewis and the Blue Hens (5-5) return to action on Friday when Delaware hosts Temple at 7 p.m. at the Bob Carpenter Center.
