NEWARK, Del. -- A total of 152 fourth and fifth grade band students from Chadds Ford (Pa.) Elementary and Pocopson (Pa.) Elementary Schools had a great experience performing as guests of the University of Delaware Athletic Department at the Blue Hen men's basketball game on Wednesday, February 9 vs. Virginia Commonwealth University.
The young performers played songs before the game, during a 30 second time-out, at half time, and after the double overtime game completed. Their selections included songs such as "Iron Man", "We Will Rock You", "Boom Boom Pow", "Eye of the Tiger", "ESPN - Sportscenter Theme", "Mission Impossible", and other popular pep band type songs.
Many of their friends and families also attended the game at the Bob Carpenter Center and the Athletic Department hopes to make this an annual event for these young musicians.
"It was tremendous to have such a great band playing at our game," said Delaware men's basketball head coach Monté Ross. "The presence of these students and their families was a huge lift to our team and helped us take the conference leader to double overtime."
"The experience of playing and cheering at a college basketball game is something that those students and their families will remember and cherish for a long time," said Band Director Kenneth Miller. "Being able to witness and participate along side of Delaware's pep band will hopefully go a long way at keeping them involved in music."
