RICHMOND, Va. -- University of Delaware freshman guard Devon Saddler picked up conference honors for the third consecutive week as he was named the Colonial Athletic Association Men's Basketball Co-Rookie of the Week on Monday.
Saddler was selected the CAA Rookie of the Week on Feb. 7 and Feb. 14 in addition to earning CAA Co-Rookie of the Week honors on January 17. His four conference rookie awards are tied for the most in Delaware history, as Alphonso Dawson also won the award four times during the 2007-08 season.
Saddler averaged 21.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game in the Blue Hens’ two contests last week, finishing 11 of 22 from the field including 7 of 12 from three-point range.
Saddler scored 16 points during Delaware’s 72-66 win Tuesday at Northeastern, going 4 of 7 from the field and 7 of 10 from the free throw line. He then led the Blue Hens in scoring for the eighth time in 10 games by pouring in 27 points to go with a season-high eight rebounds Saturday at Rider. Saddler’s 27 points tied the UD single game freshman record, as Ken Luck also scored 27 against Rider on March 2, 1979.
Saddler has now scored 352 points this season, also a Blue Hen freshman record, as on Saturday he surpassed the 341 points scored by Dawson during the 2007-08 season. Saddler currently is tied for 12th in the CAA with 3.0 assists per game, 13th with a 46.8 field goal percentage, and 15th with 13.0 points per game.
Saddler shared CAA Co-Rookie of the Week honors with Drexel forward Dartaye Ruffin, while James Madison's Denzel Bowles and George Mason's Ryan Pearson was named the CAA Co-Players of the Week.
Saddler and the Blue Hens host Towson on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Delaware’s final home game of the season.
